Why is Aldi so fucking good? If I had to make a list of all the good things in my life, it would be a piece of paper with ‘live five minutes away from an Aldi’ written on it.
The cut-price German supermarket is too good to us – we don’t deserve it. When it’s not improving our summers ten-fold by providing cheap hot tubs, slip ‘n’ slides and outdoor pizza ovens, it’s flogging us 18-inch Tomahawk steaks for peanuts.
It doesn’t need to keep on going impressing us, but it does and it has, with this gin that costs less than a tenner and has been named as one of the best in the world at a prestigious international spirits competition.
Are you having that?
Aldi’s 9.97 (13.09) Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin was handed a gold medal at the International Wine and Spirits Challenge (IWSC) ahead of a bottle that costs four times as much.
So good news for gin lovers and cheap-skates, and for cheap-skate gin lovers like me… well, we’re just having the best day ever.
In fact, it’s not just gin which Aldi does so well – it managed to pick up 20 medals at the competition for its fine range of spirits. It also won Supermarket Own Brand Spirits Range Of The Year at the International Spirits Challenge.
A spokesperson from the International Spirits Challenge told the MailOnline: “The display of awards achieved by Aldi this year at the International Spirits Challenge was fantastic.
“They consistently showcased high quality products in the blind tastings, which demonstrates that you don’t have to compromise on price to enjoy great tasting drinks.” Too right, mate.
Also, for what it’s worth, I drank near enough a bottle of this last weekend and the hangover was minimal.
