Hairstylist Kayley Olsson posted some pictures on Facebook on August 8 of a very depressed teenage girl who came to see her for a haircut. The 16-year-old, whose depression was so severe she could basically only get out of bed to go to the bathroom, had stopped brushing her hair, resulting in a big, knotty, scary, out of control mess. She still had a few weeks before she had to go back to school, but she had school pictures the next day and she needed to get hair taken care of somehow.
Today I had one of the hardest experiences with my client who I am keeping anonymous, I had a 16 year girl come in with…

At first the teen requested that Olsson just cut her hair all the way off, saying that she couldn’t deal with the pain of combing it all out, and referring to herself as “worthless.”
But instead of chopping it all off, Olsson went above and beyond for this unnamed girl, spending eight hours the first day and another five hours the next (the day of the pictures) detangling and salvaging the girl’s hair.
Olsson is obviously sympathetic to the girl’s condition, and part of her post focused on depression. She wrote,
At the end of the day I want this to be a lesson to people. MENTAL HEALTH is a thing, it effects people all around the world and of all ages! PARENTS take it serious don’t just push your kids off and tell them to get over something they legitimately can’t. A CHILD should NEVER feel so worthless to not even want to brush their hair.
The best part was that when it was all done, the girl told Olsson, “I will actually smile for my schools pictures today, you made me feel like me again.”
