Most of us think of celebrities as just that, celebrities.
We’re shocked whenever we see them on the street, doing the same things that we do.
I mean, how weird is it that Jennifer Lawrence loves shopping at Target just like us regular people?!
In reality, it’s not really weird.
Celebrities are more than their status. They are regular people who have lives off the screen. They’re wives, husbands, daughters, sons, even parents!
Why do we find it so hard to believe that they’re more than just a celebrity?
One of the celebrities we often forget has other roles to play in life, like dad, mom, daughter, son, wife, or husband.
Celebrities are just normal people who deal with real-life issues just like us.
They can suffer from mental health-related issues, like PTSD, depression, anxiety.
What affects us can affect them too!
Jim Carrey is one of the funniest men in the world. We all know who he is, or we’ve at least seen him in a few things, regardless if we recognize his name.
Personally, my first introduction to him was The Grinch, the Christmas classic that taught be the true meaning of Christmas.
However, he’s known around the world as a funny man. Someone who can make you laugh not matters what.
When Jim isn’t on screen, Jim plays the role of father and grandfather and he actually deals with some pretty serious issues.
Just like most funny men and women, Jim deals with depression.
Dealing with depression can be pretty hard.
It’s almost like having a black cloud follow you wherever you go.
It can be hard to stay positive and to see the good side of things.
It can also be hard pulling yourself out of a low spell, where nothing seems to be doing right.
All of us will experience this hard emotional time, but you can and will manage it.
Sometimes our low periods stay with us for quite a while, and won’t eventually fade away.
It could be depression, something which is hard to spot or recognize in yourself or in your friends.
Depression is an illness that can cost lives.
It is a scary and unpredictable disorder.
It can easily go unnoticed and undiagnosed for a long time.
But the longer it goes undiagnosed, the quicker the person who has it will sink.
Thankfully Jim has to speak openly and publically about his issues with mental health, meaning people suffering from issues won’t feel alone with their illness.
It’s certainly something I highly commend Jim for doing!
The Canadian actor and comedian recently opened up about his history and past battles with depression in an interview.
He said that his battle with mental illness is more or less a war against his own mind.
Jim said in the interview:
“I’m free of the business. I’m not the business. I don’t care what people think of me after I die. All I want is for people to think of me as a good energy here, a nice fragrance that has been left behind.
“At this point, I don’t have depression. There is not an experience of depression.
“I had that for years, but now, when the rain comes, it rains, but it doesn’t stay. It doesn’t stay long enough to immerse me and drown me anymore.”
He used to manage his depression with medication like Prozac, however he found there were too many ups and downs and not enough consistency. He told CBS in 2004: “It feels like a low level of despair you live in. Where you’re not getting any answers, but you’re living OK. And you can smile at the office. You know? But it’s a low level of despair.”
Jim has even admitted that these days he doesn’t take anything these days to affect his mood.
That means no alcohol, no drugs, and no coffee.
Jim has even attempted to make an entrance into the art world and even admitted how hard it was to show the finished product to the public.
“Everything I do risks the total destruction of the piece. I’m often going, ‘God damn it, if this doesn’t work, I’ve put so much effort into this painting.’
“But if you don’t do it, you’ll never reach some sublime thing – you know, something that will really touch someone. Those are always the risks that go to the edge of destroying something you really care about.”
The actor also explained how some people have tried to break off a ‘piece of the Holy Grail’ from him for themselves recently.
But thankfully he’s managed to get a hold of his depression, which is welcome news to his fans!
