Schools Now Offer Bullet Proof Backpacks Following Multiple Mass Shootings

In the wake of terrorist attacks across America, a Miami private school is offering parents an eyebrow-raising item for sale: bulletproof panels for their kids’ backpacks.

The website of Florida Christian School includes a list of items for sale, and the list includes winter clothes, red school t-shirts and ballistic panels for backpacks.

George Gulla, Florida Christian School’s dean of students and head of school security, said the bulletproof panels would add “another level of protection” to students of the pre-K through grade 12 school “in the event of an active shooter.”

While, the private school has never had a shooting incident, Gulla is concerned about student security nonetheless.

Many deadly shootings have occurred in at seemingly random locations in recent years, including the radical Islamic terror attack at a Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando, the massive shooting that took place just over a month ago in Las Vegas, and the church shooting this past weekend at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

In the wake of these events, more and more types of bulletproof products have appeared on the market to satisfy a growing demand. The panels sold at Florida Christian School are going for $120.

“The teachers are trained to instruct the students to use their backpacks as a shield to protect themselves,” Gulla stated. Gulla also said showing teachers how to use the panels is just a part of the overall safety training he gives them.

While many are dealing with the apparent threat of random shootings by beefing up security, others are alerting the public to the connection between mental health, certain pharmaceutical drugs and mass shootings.

There is a fundamental factor associated with nearly every mass shooting and that is: the mental health of the person pulling the trigger. In fact, nearly every mass shooting over the last 20 years involved a shooter who used psychotropic medications—soon before or during the attack—to treat a variety of mental health problems.
