A couple says they had to cancel their trip because their local Starbucks charged them almost $4,500 for two cups of coffee.
Jesse and Deedee O’Dell of Oklahoma have been going to Starbucks every morning for 16 years and getting the same two drinks: an iced Americano and a cappuccino. Take a look at how their order turned out:
The order usually costs them about $10, but it cost them an eye-popping $4,456.27 one day last month.
The couple didn’t know that they were charged an extra $4,444.44 on top of their regular coffee order.
The strange thing is that Jesse says he remembers choosing “No Tip” on the card machine.
Deedee didn’t notice the mistake until she was at the mall with her four kids and her card was turned down.
After finding out why the money was missing, Jesse called the Starbucks district manager. The manager told him that there must have been a problem with the card machine’s network.
The couple was told that they would receive two checks that would add up to the full amount of the tip, but when the checks arrived, they had already been cashed.
Jesse says that they called the customer service helpline “probably 30 or 40 times that day” until a representative told them they would be sent new checks, which hasn’t happened yet.
Jesse, Deedee, and their kids were planning a trip to Thailand, where Deedee is from, to see her sister, whom she hasn’t seen in years.
But the couple had to cancel the trip because they couldn’t get their money back.
The couple said that they are now working with the Tulsa Police Department to try to figure out what’s going on.
They are also telling people who order coffee from Starbucks to check the receipt every time.
This is something that has caused huge duress in our own family, and hopefully other people don’t have to go through something like this,
said, Jesse.
A Starbucks representative said that Deedee and Jesse’s problem had been fixed.
This was an unfortunate situation that has since been resolved,
they stated.
The tip was entered by the customer in error. While the original refund checks had a typo and therefore did not go through, we issued new ones on January 31, which were received and cashed by the customer on Monday, February 6.
