Some relationships between famous people don’t stand the test of time and fame. Some don’t last long and end up in scandals, trials, and accusations against each other. But there are some couples who find a way out of this cycle. They show what pure, unending love really looks like, and it’s a very inspiring sight. And you can see this in today’s featured couple, the famous soccer player Lionel Messi and his wife Antonela Roccuzzo. They’ve been in love for a long time, and their marriage is only getting stronger as time goes on.
It began when they were very young.
Lionel Messi’s dream, when he was a little boy, was to be a soccer player. But his more spiritual dream wasn’t talked about as much in interviews. One day, he sat down at the table in his room, took out a piece of paper and a pen, and started to write, “Antonela.”
In the letter, the little boy wrote just one sentence to a little girl:
One day, we will get engaged.
And this was the start of a love story that could be turned into a movie on its own.
Lionel Messi was born in Argentina in 1987, in the city of Rosario. Antonela Roccuzzo, a beautiful girl who is Messi’s true love, was born just one year later, in 1988. When they were young, they fell in love at the house of Lucas Scaglia, a friend of Messi’s.
When they first met, Messi was at Scaglia’s house playing Sony games. Roccuzzo was also there, and she asked them if they needed anything. Messi was too shy to say anything when he was young.
He was 9 years old at the time, and Roccuzzo was 8. Since that day, the boy couldn’t stop thinking about the girl. They became friends quickly, but Messi knew even then that he wanted to be with her for the rest of his life.
Their love had to get past a lot of problems.
But when Messi was 11, Barcelona came into his life like a hurricane. In 2000, he moved to Spain, and life brought the two lovers apart. Even though they were still together for a while, this was the start of a real breakup.
The couple did their best to stay in touch, but there weren’t as many messaging apps and other tools back then, so it wasn’t easy at all. Soon, they stopped seeing each other because they were talking less and less.
Their love seemed to be something that only lived on in their memories, but a sudden tragedy brought them back together. In 2005, Rocuzzo’s close friend died in a traffic accident. At the time, the girl was only 17 years old, and she was heartbroken. She didn’t go to school for a few days because she was so sad about her loss. When Lionel Messi heard the bad news, he went straight to Argentina to be with Roccuzzo.
That’s when they got a second chance at being together. Messi and Roccuzzo rekindled their true and deep feelings for each other, but they kept their relationship quiet for a while.
The happy reunion made their relationship everlasting.
In an interview in January 2009, Messi first revealed their relationship. Thiago, Mateo, and Ciro are Messi and Roccuzzo’s three sons. Messi put the ball under his shirt after scoring in Argentina’s 4-0 win over Ecuador on June 2, 2012, to celebrate Roccuzzo’s first pregnancy.
He got married to the love of his life on June 30, 2017, at a fancy hotel in Rosario called Hotel City Center. In October 2017, Roccuzzo told everyone that they were going to have their third child.
The love story of Messi and Roccuzzo sounds like a beautiful fairy tale. They’ve been together and in love for most of their lives, and even though they’ve been through pain and tragedy, they’re stronger as a couple because of it.
Now, we know that Roccuzzo will always be there for Messi if he has problems and fails. She will lend him a hand and her heart and help him through all the bad times.
