Christopher Nolan‘s upcoming biopic about Robert Oppenheimer tells the historic tale of the father of the atomic bomb. The lead role is played by Cillian Murphy and Nolan has boasted about not using CGI in his film. Nolan’s view of CGI is that they can “feel a bit safe.” He is certainly one filmmaker who does not want to compromise on authenticity.
This Oppenheimer Cast Was Not Interested In Science Lessons
An actor has to do a lot of preparations before playing the character and if it’s a Christopher Nolan movie, you need to do your homework well. While some actors are willing to go above and beyond to do justice to their characters, others rely on the talents that have taken them thus far. And one cast member of Oppenheimer chose the latter approach to do justice to his role.
In an interview with The Guardian, actor Cillian Murphy talked about his characters Robert Oppenheimer (Oppenheimer) and Thomas Shelby (Peaky Blinders). He revealed that he did a “lot of reading” to prepare for his role in the upcoming Nolan movie.
“[I did] an awful lot of reading. I’m interested in the man and what [inventing the atomic bomb] does to the individual. The mechanics of it, that’s not really for me – I don’t have the intellectual capability to understand them, but these contradictory characters are fascinating. Tommy Shelby’s a complete contradiction, too. People identify with that, because we all walk around with these contradictory ideas coexisting in our heads.”
While he did read about the man he portrayed in the movie, Murphy was not keen on learning the intricacies and the science behind making an atomic bomb. The movie is based on Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin’s biography and is titled American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J Robert Oppenheimer. The story is about Robert Oppenheimer, an American theoretical physicist who was behind the Manhattan Project.
Murphy also emphasized his love for director Christopher Nolan. He stated how he will always be there whenever Nolan needs him for a part. The Peaky Blinders actor also counted him amongst his list of fantastic filmmakers.
“I’ll always turn up for Chris, whatever the size of the part. Chris will call me up and I’m there. Isn’t it wonderful that filmmakers are still making challenging, demanding films within the studio system, shot on film rather than Imax? I think he’s flying the flag. Him, Paul Thomas Anderson and Quentin Tarantino, are fantastic filmmakers making interesting work on a massive scale.”
