2024 is going to be the year for popular movies to make a comeback on the silver screen. The pandemic had put cinemas out of style, however, 2023 seemed to ignite a ray of hope and brought the cinema-goers out of their home. With massive box office successes of popular movies such as Barbie and Oppenheimer, the love for the big screen made its way back to people’s hearts.
And the movie magic is back as cinema lovers are gearing up to catch their favorite movies in 2024 on celluloid. Let’s check out the list of feature films making their way to the theatres next year.
12 Most-Awaited Popular Movies of 2024
12. Snow White
Even though the critics have not responded positively to Disney’s live-action versions of their beloved animated films, moviegoers have been flocking to the box office. This could be the reason why Snow White is getting its own remake more than 87 years after the debut of the original cartoon in 1937.
Rachel Ziegler from West Side Story stars as Snow White, with Gal Gadot from Wonder Woman playing the role of the Evil Queen. This Disney feature film will be directed by Marc Webb and is slated to hit theatres on March 22, 2024.
11. Ballerina
Ana de Armas is featured in a spin-off movie from John Wick’s world, where she plays one of the female assassins educated by the Ruska Roma, the criminal ring headed by Anjelica Huston’s “Director” which was shown in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.
The spin-off of one of the most popular movies of 2023 is a sure-shot hit among the fans. Although there is not much information yet, we know the movie will be another story of revenge and will be set between Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, with Keanu Reeves and his Continental people also making an appearance. The movie is set to release on June 7, 2024.
10. Borderlands
Be prepared for some weird and wild intergalactic adventures as director Eli Roth takes the lead for this movie version of the beloved and eccentric video game series. Starring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black. The film was penned by Craig Mazin who recently achieved success with The Last of Us, another acclaimed video game franchise. The release date is set for August 9, 2024.
9. Challengers
Zendaya stars in Luca Guadagnino’s latest movie Challengers. The movie focuses on the connections between a former tennis prodigy who is now a coach (Zendaya), her husband Mike Faist who is a past champion and struggling, and Josh O’Connor – her ex – who is his former best friend.
The trailer release has already placed it among the 2024 popular movies list and we can’t wait to see what the story beholds.
8. Gladiator 2
Ridley Scott is back behind the camera for the follow-up to the classic movie Gladiator. Rumor has it, the plot focuses on an adult Lucius (portrayed by Paul Mescal), now the ruler of Rome, and Connie Nielsen will appear again as Lucilla.
The cast includes Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, Djimon Hounsou, Joseph Quinn, and Derek Jacobi. It will hit theatres on November 22, 2024.
7. Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim
The highly-anticipated new movie from Warner Bros., set in the Lord of the Rings world, will be an animated prequel that tells the story of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary sovereign of Rohan. Brian Cox will be the voice actor for the protagonist who lived 183 years prior to the events portrayed in The Two Towers, while Miranda Otto will also be returning to her part as Eowyn, who will serve as the story’s anchor.
Being a Lord of the Rings franchise automatically lists this feature as one of the popular movies. It will be helmed by Kenji Kamiyama and will be released on December 13, 2024.
6. Kraven The Hunter
Originally planned to be featured in the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movie series prior to its termination by Sony, the renowned Spider-Man villain is finally getting to make his cinematic debut. J.C. Chandor (All Is Lost, Triple Frontier) will be directing, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (who played Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron) will be starring as the character. The release date is set for August 20, 2024.
If the makers get it right with the story and the cinematic experience, there’s nothing stopping it from becoming Sony’s one of the highest-grossing and most popular movies from Spider-Verse.
5. Beetlejuice 2
In this follow-up to 1988’s Beetlejuice, Tim Burton reunites with Michael Keaton in the titular role. Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara step back into the roles of Lydia and Delia Deetz. Jenna Ortega joins the cast as Lydia’s daughter. The sequel will hit theatres on September 5, 2024.
4. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire
The 2021 MonsterVerse showdown is getting a sequel, and the two biggest kaiju ever are back. This time around, Godzilla and Kong won’t be foes but allies as they battle a huge, unknown threat. Dan Stevens will be the star of the movie, and Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle will reprise their roles from Godzilla vs. Kong. Adam Wingard, who was in charge of the first movie, will direct this one too.
3. Dune: Part II
WB thankfully decided to give Denis Villeneuve the go-ahead, despite the simultaneous release of the first installment on HBO Max. Dune Part One became one of the most popular movies of 2021 right after its release. Part Two is set to feature some major stars such as Florence Pugh, Léa Seydoux, Austin Butler, and Christopher Walken as Villeneuve takes on telling the second portion of Frank Herbert’s lauded science fiction novel.
2. Joker: Folie a Deux
Todd Phillips, the director behind the highly successful R-rated version of the Batman villain, which earned Joaquin Phoenix the Oscar for Best Actor, is at the helm once again for Folie à Deux. The Joker was one of the most popular movies of 2019 and we’re hopeful that the sequel exceed expectations.
Lady Gaga, who is portraying the complicated love interest of the villain, Harley Quinn, is also in the movie, and it is said to be a musical!
1. Deadpool 3
It will be a spectacle to witness the first Deadpool movie produced by Disney since they acquired Fox, given the popularity of the Reynolds-led series and its R-rated comedy. Deadpool 3 is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated popular movies of 2024.
It remains to be seen how this will integrate with the typically PG-13 atmosphere of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as why and how Jackman is returning as Wolverine after the triumphant finale of Logan.
