After an unexpected 2023 NFL season with the New England Patriots, veteran running back Ezekiel Elliott is back with the Dallas Cowboys, focused on one goal: winning a Super Bowl. However, Elliott’s strong desire isn’t aligning with owner Jerry Jones’ offseason strategy.
Despite boasting three consecutive 12-5 seasons, the Cowboys have consistently fallen short in the playoffs. As Pro Bowl linebacker Micah Parsons expresses frustration, the team must address key roster issues to get Elliott that coveted ring.
1. Re-Sign Defensive Leader Stephon Gilmore
Veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore became a crucial addition to the Cowboys‘ secondary after arriving from Indianapolis last year. Despite losing Trevon Diggs to a season-ending injury, Gilmore delivered a stellar performance, racking up career-high numbers in tackles and maintaining a strong defensive presence.
With Diggs expected to return, Gilmore could continue anchoring the secondary alongside All-Pro DaRon Bland, providing valuable experience in the slot and depth in coverage. Elliott choosing No. 15 over his old No. 21 (now Gilmore’s) could be an intentional nod to a hoped-for partnership.

2. Inject New Running Back Competition
To complement Elliott’s seasoned skills, the Cowboys need to bolster their backfield. Rico Dowdle, who managed just 4.1 yards per carry in 2023, won’t suffice for a team chasing a title. Free-agent running backs like Jerick McKinnon or Matt Breida offer reliable veteran support.
Their proven versatility would relieve pressure off Elliott, allowing him to shine without overburdening himself. An unbalanced offense plagued the Cowboys last season; diversifying with a fresh face would counter that threat.
3. Rekindle Familiar Flames with Connor Williams
After Tyler Biadasz’s departure, Dallas needs an offensive line savior, and Connor Williams could be the solution. Though he chased a lucrative deal with the Miami Dolphins, Williams’ tenure with Dallas makes him a strong fit.
Despite an ACL injury last year, Williams remained one of the NFL’s top centers. He would immediately reinforce the offensive line as a trusted starter, helping the Cowboys rebuild a line weakened by Biadasz’s exit and Tyron Smith’s absence. His return would bring stability back to a vulnerable position.
Building a Championship Future
Securing Ezekiel Elliott’s ring will require smart, strategic moves. The Cowboys have an opportunity to strengthen their defense, add reliable offensive support, and fill critical gaps to make Elliott’s Super Bowl dream a reality.
