Apple recently released AirPods 2 and it is making headlines all over the Tech world. There are a lot of improvements over the previous AirPods, and the price has increased too.
They also include the hands-free ‘Hey Siri’ support, a wireless charging case, and the new H1 audio chip. It has improved the performance and connectivity of the earbuds.
But there is a big issue too, AirPods 2 cannot be repaired, a teardown reveals that they are impossible to repair.
iFIXIT AirPods 2 Teardown Report
iFixit, a popular tech repair company, did a Teardown of the latest model of AirPods 2 and revealed the following conclusions:
- They are designed in such a way that they cannot be serviced. We cannot access the hardware components without damaging the device.
- The Sealed-in batteries limit the AirPods’ lifespan, which makes them a consumable/disposable item.
- The positive part is that the new wireless charging coil has a thermal pad which keep it cool under pressure.
Comparison with Samsung Galaxy Buds
iFixit did a Teardown of the Samsung Galaxy Buds too, and rated it much higher compared to AirPods 2.
Samsung Galaxy Buds:
The external assemblies are held together with clips instead of glue. The earbuds use a coin-cell battery, which is easier to repair replace.
Apple AirPods 2:
It’s impossible to access the internal hardware component without damaging the device. There is no practical way to repair them, even if we go to a professional repair service.
iFixit gave a rating of 0/10 to AirPods 2 and 6/10 to Galaxy Buds and for repairability.
