Just as Arisu and his companions let out a sigh of relief, thinking they had broken free from the unusual trials, the malicious smile of the Joker card suddenly wiped away their contentment. The frightening grin seemed to make fun of their very existence. Their escape was an illusion, shattered by a mocking laugh that drew them back into the mysterious routine.
Alice in Borderland, came out in December 2020 and took inspiration from a manga of the same name. It takes us into the life of Arisu, who finds himself in an alternate Tokyo—a city without any human inhabitants.
Bereft of understanding, his sole purpose becomes acquiring “visas” to evade execution. Amid this, he crosses paths with rock climber Usagi (played by Tao Tsuchiya). Together, they become unlikely partners in solving the difficult circumstances that surround them.
The inaugural season left audiences riveted with its plotline. A two-year interval led fans to the equally exciting Season 2, unveiling a fresh wave of excitement.
The official synopsis of Alice in Borderland reads:
“An aimless gamer and his two friends find themselves in a parallel Tokyo, where they’re forced to compete in a series of sadistic games to survive.”
Alice in Borderland Season 2 Plot
As the curtain falls on Season 2, the stakes have never been higher for Arisu and his comrades. The Season 2 finale revealed the reason behind Arisu’s crucial role in the final game and how he managed to coax Usagi into participating.
The Queen of Hearts game saw Mira, embodying the croquet piece, skillfully manipulating the duo into doubting the very reality they stand upon. But it’s Usagi who sways Arisu back from the brink of disbelief, ultimately leading them to confess their feelings for one another.
Although they triumph in the game, Mira’s fate is sealed by a sky laser, leaving players with the choice to return to reality or remain in the Borderland. Most opt to leave, but some, like Banda and Yaba, choose otherwise.
Upon reentry into the real world, they’re met with the shocking revelation of a meteor’s destruction that decimated a significant portion of Tokyo. Strangely, none among them retains memories of their shared Borderland experiences. Arisu learns that all survivors who hadn’t met their demise were mysteriously transported back to Borderland.
The narrative circles back to Arisu and Usagi reuniting at the hospital. The camera pans across a table strewn with playing cards, swept away by an unseen force, save for the Joker card.
Alice in Borderland Season 3
As of now, Netflix has not renewed Alice in Borderland for a third season.
Should Alice in Borderland grace us with a Season 3, expect deviations in the plot’s trajectory due to limited source material. As reported by What’s on Netflix, the appearance of the Joker card signifies the possible introduction of the character, who holds a prominent role in the manga but has yet to make an appearance in the television adaptation.
