The novel Altered Carbon has two subsequent novels Broken Angels and Woken Furies. So there is no dearth of source material for the show. It is not known yet if Kalogridis will stick to the original story or not.
The new series will move thirty years ahead directly. Kovacs will be seen serving a band of mercenaries and fighting against against a corporate-sponsored government. Kalogridis said,
Richard has a very big-budget brain. The second book involves a worldwide war with nuclear explosions, some space travel, a giant alien dreadnought and an interstellar fight between aliens. It is prohibitively expensive in scope.
Altered Carbon Season 2 will further explore the theme of identity. It wants to cover different aspects of human life. Kalogridis added,
LGBTQ, and so many issues and the ways in which we feel comfortable or uncomfortable in our physical bodies, are things that I think the show is very right to explore, but has not yet been able to do.
