The Associate Professor of Information Systems, Film and Digital Media at Anderson School of Management at University of New Mexico, Nick Flor was recently spotted reacting to a news article related to a judge who ruled the favour to the authorities of New Hampshire permission to cross-examine the audio recordings from Amazon Echo in a double murder case. Two women were stabbed to death recently.
The next-gen Bluetooth speaker from Amazon known as Echo utilises its Artificial Intelligence voice assistant, Alexa to respond to numerous commands made by verbal communication only when Alexa is spoken as the triggering cue to get the Echo running. This voice command feature has raised many questions related to why did Timothy Verrill, the murder suspect of double homicide activated Amazon Echo before killing the two women.
The Associate Professor, Nick Flor said that “the time when Amazon claimed that Alexa would only run its simulation to record verbal communication-based commands is nothing but a big freakin’ lie. These smart devices are always recording whatever goes on around them. All of your conversations can be leaked by the one SJW who is working as Amazon Support.
Nick Flor, the Associate Professor also remarked that “he guesses that they aren’t technically lying. It is true that Alexa will only start recording when a person calls out Alexa but what Amazon doesn’t reveal is that Alexa never stops recording after Alexa is spoken.
This is the first time that suspicions have been reportedly raised whether the devices such as Echo constantly records the private conversations. At the beginning of 2018, there was a revelation that a private conversation between a husband and a wife residing in Portland eventually ended up in the inbox of the wife’s colleague.
Soon after the work colleague received the email, he instantly called up the woman and asked her to unplug the Alexa devices right away as she has been hacked.
