Andre Braugher, who played the role of Captain Raymond Holt in the hit television series ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘, has died at the age of 61. Andre Braugher died on 11th December after a brief illness. Braugher’s publicist Jennifer Allen confirmed the news of his death to media sources. May his soul rest in peace.
About Andre Braugher
Andre Braugher was born in Chicago on July 1, 1962. He finished high school at St. Ignatius College Prep. After receiving a scholarship, he attended Stanford University and graduated in 1984 with a BA in theatre. He later enrolled in the renowned Juilliard School’s Drama Division, where he eventually earned his degree in 1988. His father worked as a heavy-equipment operator, his mother for the U.S. Postal Service.
In addition to his mother Sally and brother Charles, Braugher is survived by his wife Ami Brabson, who co-starred in “Homicide: Life on the Street,” and their three children, Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley.
Although he thought about going into medicine, he found out at Stanford that ‘creating a play was more thrilling than doing maths in the library’. “You get no applause in the library.”
In the beginning, he frequently appeared in New York City’s Public Theatre Shakespeare in the Park plays, where he portrayed characters from As You Like It, Hamlet, Henry V, and Richard II. He said, “I find Shakespeare’s complexity, depth, and richness to be an incredible magnet.”
Andre Braugher And His Amazing Roles
From 2013 until 2021, Braugher was well-known for playing the honourable Captain Raymond Holt in the police procedural comedy series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” His character quickly became a fan favourite because of his austere, no-nonsense demeanour combined with a strong sense of empathy, particularly when he was partnered with Andy Samberg’s hotshot Det. Jake Peralta in a scene.
For Braugher, who was accustomed to playing dark, serious dramas, Brooklyn Nine-Nine marked a significant departure, even if he had dabbled in comedy in the TNT dramedy Men of a Certain Age.
In 1998—his final year on the show—he was awarded a lead actor Emmy for his portrayal of Detective Frank Pembleton on NBC’s “Homicide: Life on Street.” With his powerful portrayal, Braugher became one of the most well-known actors to come out of the critically acclaimed police drama starring Barry Levinson, Tom Fontana, and David Simon, the former writer for the Baltimore Sun who penned the nonfiction book “Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets,” published in 1991. For his role as a master crook on FX’s 2006 series “Thief,” Braugher was awarded another Emmy for miniseries or movie.
The regal Braugher first gained recognition on television in a series of Telly Savalas-starring Kojak telefilms in 1989–1990 as Det. Winston Blake. He also portrayed Mike Olshansky, a former Philadelphia police officer who became a cab driver, in the 2002–2004 CBS series Hack.
In February, Andre Braugher was cast as the male protagonist opposite Uzo Aduba in Netflix’s Shonda Rhimes thriller The Residence. Production on the White House murder mystery began, but it was suspended due to Hollywood’s two strikes.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine Cast Reacts To Andre’s Death
The Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast is sharing their sorrow over the loss of their captain, Andre Braugher, as well as their happy memories.
“Can’t believe you’re gone so soon,” Terry Crews, who played yogurt-loving Terry Jeffords on the show, wrote on his Instagram.
Dirk Blocker, who portrayed one half of the incredibly indolent police team Hitchcock and Scully, likewise remarked on Braugher’s extraordinary skill. “Fiercely intelligent, remarkably kind, supportive, generous and possessed a deep and extraordinary talent, and had even more to offer,” he wrote in an Instagram post. “I’m inconsolable. I cherish him. It was certainly a privilege to have worked with him for nine years and to simply be in his presence. My sincere sympathies are with his family.”
