British actor and producer, Archie Madekwe, gained recognition for his appearance in the Apple TV+ show See (2019-2022). He has also starred in the movies Midsommar (2019), Gran Turismo, and Saltburn (all released in 2023).
Early Life
Madekwe, who hails from South London, comes from a family of actors, as his cousin is the well-known actress Ashley Madekwe. At the age of 14, he started his education at the BRIT School and also became a member of the National Youth Theatre.
Later, he pursued his education at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), but his studies were cut short when he landed a role in the West End production of The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?
Archie Madekwe’s Career
In 2014, Archie Madekwe’s first appearance on television was as a guest in an episode of the BBC’s medical series Casualty. Later in 2016, he played Luca in two episodes of the Channel 4 comedy-drama Fresh Meat.
In 2017, Madekwe’s first appearance in a West End production was in The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, where he starred alongside Damian Lewis and Sophie Okonedo.
After catching the attention of a casting director during his performance in the play, he was cast as Luke in the film Teen Spirit, marking his first credited role in a movie. He was recognized as a ‘Star of Tomorrow’ by Screen International that year. Madekwe also appeared in the Channel 4 sitcom Hang Ups during the same year.
In 2019, Archie Madekwe‘s acting career included playing the role of Kofun in the sci-fi show See on Apple TV+, portraying Courfeyrac in the BBC One version of Les Misérables, and taking on the character of Simon in Ari Aster’s Midsommar, a folk horror movie produced by A24.
He also lent his voice to the character of Sedgwick in the Emmy-winning “Ice” episode of the animated anthology series Love, Death & Robots on Netflix, and starred in Neill Blomkamp’s sports film Gran Turismo based on a real-life story.
In 2021, he starred in the movie Voyagers alongside Colin Farrell and Lily-Rose Depp and provided the voice for Sedgwick in the award-winning “Ice” segment of the Netflix animated series Love, Death & Robots. Additionally, Madekwe took on the leading role in Gran Turismo, a sports film directed by Neill Blomkamp and inspired by true events.
In 2023, he will be seen in the Netflix film Heart of Stone and Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn. He also lent his voice to Sedgwick in the “Ice” episode of Love, Death & Robots, which received an Emmy award, and played a major role in Gran Turismo, another of Blomkamp’s films based on a real-life story.
