On Tuesday, Ariana Grande called out body shamers on social media.
The 29-year-old singer posted a video to TikTok in which she talked about how fans were worried about how she looked recently and said she was healthier than ever.
In the past few weeks, Ariana Grande has been in London shooting a version of “Wicked.” People on social media commented about her weight and said that her face has changed over time.
But the singer said that the version of her body that people were comparing her to was the “unhealthiest version of my body,” and that the way she looks now is a big change for her health.
She kept her selfie video relaxed by filming it against a wall of windows while wearing a plain gray zip-up hoodie over a pale pink tank top.
She had her blonde hair pulled back tightly to show off her perfectly made-up face and glossy lips. She also wore a white handbag across her body as an accessory.
Before she began, Ariana Grande admitted,
I don’t do this often. I don’t like it. I’m not good at it.
But I just wanted to address your concerns about my body and talk a little bit about what it means to be a person with a body and to be seen and to be paid such close attention to,
she continued.
I think we should be gentler and less comfortable commenting on people’s bodies, no matter what.
This meant even getting rid of praises that are too focused on how someone looked.
If you think you’re saying something good or well-intentioned, whatever it is, healthy or unhealthy, big or small, this or that, sexy or not sexy, we should really work towards not doing that as much.
She said that her fans and critics should focus on less physical praise or just learn to ‘ignore’ the things they don’t like about her and other people.
I think we should help each other work towards just being safer and keeping each other safer,
she added.
But Ariana Grande focused more on herself and said that she thought she was healthier than she had been in the past, despite what some of her fans might think.
I also just want to say: one, there are many different kinds of beautiful. There are many different ways to look healthy and beautiful,
she stated.
And personally for me, the body that you’ve been comparing my current body to was the unhealthiest version of my body.
She said that she was “on a lot of antidepressants” and “drinking on them,” which is usually not a good idea because the two things can mix in dangerous ways.
Ariana Grande also admitted she was
eating poorly and at the lowest point of my life when I looked the way you consider my healthy…
She made it clear that the version of herself from years ago “wasn’t my healthy.”
I know I shouldn’t have to explain that, but I do feel like maybe having an openness or vulnerability, something good might come from it. That’s the first thing, healthy can look different,
she said.
Ariana Grande also told her fans that they are not her friends, so they don’t know much about her mental or physical health.
You never know what someone is going through so even if you’re coming from a loving place or a caring place, that person probably is working on it or has a support system that they’re working on it with,
she continued.
At the end, Ariana tried to cheer up her friends and followers who have experienced rude remarks about their looks or health.
You’re beautiful no matter what phase you’re in,
she declared.
She also tried to stop the expected comments about her face by saying that she wasn’t as made up as she usually is when she’s out in public.
By the way, I’m not wearing eyelashes or eyeliner right now, this is my face, these are my eyes, so don’t freak out about that now too please, oh my God,
Ariana Grande added.
Sending you guys a lot of love and I think you’re beautiful no matter what you’re going through, no matter what weight, no matter how you like to do your makeup these days, no matter what cosmetic procedures you’ve had or not or anything,
she added before signing off.
I just think you’re beautiful and wanted to share some feelings. Have a very beautiful day and I’m sending you a lot of love.
Ariana Grande celebrated Mental Health Awareness Month in May 2021 by “ending the stigma around mental health and making it normal to ask for help.”
Healing isn’t linear, fun, quick or at all easy but we are here and we’ve got to commit to making this time as healthy, peaceful and beautiful as possible. the work is so hard but we are capable and worth it. sending so much love and strength,
she added.
Ariana Grande has been open about her anxiety, sadness, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the past.
She got this illness after a bomb went off at her show in Manchester, England, in 2017.
As concertgoers were trying to leave the venue, an Islamist extremist suicide bomber set off an explosive device. This attack killed 23 people and hurt more than 1,000 others.
Ariana Grande wasn’t hurt, but it was hard for her to get over what happened.
