After joining the hip-hop group “A$AP Mob,” he took on the stage name ASAP Rocky. He bears the name Rakim, after the hip-hop musician who makes up half of the duo Eric B. & Rakim. Who Is ASAP Rocky?
Rakim Mayers aka ASAP Rocky was born on October 3, 1988, in Harlem, New York City. His father was a Barbadian while his mother is African-American. He has an older sister named Erika B. Mayers.
Adrian Mayers, a well-known businessman and former drug dealer, was his father. Regretfully, he was imprisoned in 2000 following his arrest for drug trafficking. In 2012, he passed away from pneumonia. At the time of his death, he was still in jail. The rapper has always looked up to and been motivated by his father.
Renee Black, a former American assistant nurse, is his mother. Renee suffered through a number of difficulties over the years. She has experienced living in shelters, losing a son and a daughter, and seeing her husband imprisoned. Renee named her son after Eric B, one half of the well-known hip-hop group Rakim.
At the time, the rapper was only thirteen. The gang members shot Ricky, his elder brother when they came knocking on their door for their money while their father was still in prison. The rapper was on his way to school when his mother broke the terrible news to him.
His sister, tragically passed away from drug intoxication in September of 2016. Erika had a difficult childhood, but she was a staunch supporter of her brother’s career. She was fortunate to see her brother become well-known in the entertainment business.
ASAP Rocky’s Career
ASAP Rocky has been rapping since childhood owing to the influence of his elder brother. His nickname was changed to “ASAP” when he joined the Harlem-based group “ASAP Mob” in 2007. In July 2011, he released his debut single, “Purple Swag,” which quickly became a New York City hit and catapulted him into the rap scene.
His song “Peso,” which was leaked online in August 2011, quickly gained airplay on the well-known Hot 97 New York radio station. He released a mixtape titled “Live. Love.” A$AP’ prior to agreeing to a $3 million contract with Polo Grounds Music and RCA Records. He also launched the label “A$AP Worldwide” with the deal.
In 2013, Rocky co-founded the apparel brand “A$AP” and partnered with designer Raf Simons. He declared in 2014 that he had officially signed a global representation deal with William Morris Endeavour.
In the 2014 comedy drama “Dope,” he made a brief appearance. The following year, the movie was shown at the Sundance Film Festival before being theatrically released on June 12. On his birthday, Rocky released the short album “Flacko Jodye Season.” He turned 26 that night. Rapper Juicy J contributed extra vocals to the album.
In 2016, Rocky collaborated with fashion brand, Guess, and revived the brands ’90s clothing that he wore growing up and called it GUE$$.
Rocky released his mixtape “Live. Love. A$AP” on streaming services in October 2021. He was involved in two tracks on Japanese DJ Nigo’s album “I Know Nigo!” released on March 25, 2022.
ASAP Rocky And Rihanna’s Relationship
Although Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were first just musical partners, their relationship grew into something more. In a May 2021 interview, A$AP declared that he was dating Rihanna, referring to her as “The One.” The couple has experienced many highs and lows since becoming lovers instead of just friends, from growing their family to A$AP’s arrest in Los Angeles in 2022. Son RZA Athleston Mayers, A$AP and Rihanna’s first child, was born in May 2022 and their second child was born in August 2023.
