Ashleigh Barty becomes the world’s number one tennis player
The Indigenous Australian is the third Australian woman in history who holds this position in the world in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) after Evonne Goolagong and Margaret Court. Naomi Osaka of Japan help the position but was struck down in the second round in Birmingham.
After her win, Barty said that she was glad to be a part of such an incredible journey. In late 2014, the tennis player took a hiatus from the game to play cricket in the women’s Big Bash League for the Brisbane Heat. But she decided to return in 2016 and earned considerable success.
On the WTA Tour, Barty won several doubles and singles titles including the Grand Slam singles titles this month at the French Open. She celebrated her win at the Nature Valley Classic finale with her doubles partner who is also her best friends on tour.
American tennis giant Billie Jean King also wished Barty on Twitter. He said that she was an inspiration for the next generation of Australian players. Barty is headed to Eastbourne International for an event before Wimbledon that begins next month.
Barty fans are delighted to hear the news. The tennis player truly deserves the title as she worked all her way to it.
