It seems that there are rumours of a significant X-Men character making a comeback in the next MCU film Avengers: Secret Wars. The Avengers: Secret Wars movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is expected to remain in the “upcoming” category for a very long time, but that hasn’t prevented the rumours from spreading. They have ranged from common predictions of much anticipated character appearances to boulder predictions like the notion that Avengers: Secret Wars will be the MCU’s The Flash.
Avengers: Secret Wars is currently set to release on May 7, 2027. Its release date was originally set for May 1, 2026, but this was pushed forward a year by Disney in June 2023 due to major changes to its movie schedule.
It will be the second of two Avengers movies in Phase Six, coming after Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. It’s also the fifth movie confirmed for the MCU’s Phase Six, alongside Blade, Deadpool 3, and Fantastic Four.
Ian McKellen Will Return In Avengers: Secret Wars
This was made very possible by Disney’s purchase of Fox, which included the X-Men franchise. In fact, the sequel to Doctor Strange included actor Patrick Stewart returning as Professor X. But according to the most recent rumour, an entirely new X-Men character will appear in Avengers: Secret Wars.
A brand-new crossover event is anticipated to bring together many Marvel continuities in the upcoming Avengers film. According to current reports, Spider-Man characters like Tobey Maguire’s, Andrew Garfield’s, and even Nicolas Cage’s Ghost Rider are all possibilities. However, according to sources, we will see actor Ian McKellen in Avengers: Secret Wars.
Fans are familiar with Ian McKellen because of his role as Magneto in the whole X-Men film series from Fox. From 2000 until 2006, he played the renowned supervillain for the first time in the X-Men films X, X2, and X-Men: The Last Stand. In The Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future Past, he returned to appear in cameos. And while Michael Fassbender played the character when he was younger, fans would undoubtedly enjoy seeing McKellen take over the part for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Avengers: Secret Wars
The most powerful heroes and villains from Earth are brought to Battleworld, a planet designed solely to host battles, by the cosmic being known as the Beyonder. There are many other villains, but two stand out for the movie: Doctor Doom, who hasn’t yet been cast in the MCU, and Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror.
The two-parter is expected to combine parts of the original comic book event from 1984 with the 2015 iteration, and the Beyonder—played by Jonathan Majors—might be a different version of Kang.
Given that the 2015 plot revolves around the eradication of the multiverse, any previous Marvel character, including those from the X-Men, is theoretically possible to appear. For this reason, Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine are both likely to make an appearance.
With so much time, there is room for speculation on the part the figure may play among fans. It’s not hard to understand why the argument over whether Magneto is a hero or a villain has raged continuously throughout the whole history of the character. His main objective is always the emancipation of mutants from oppression, despite his frequently horrible deeds. But will Avengers: Secret Wars include any of that murky storytelling?
The doorway is undoubtedly open for any number of series favourites to return, especially with so many cast members already returning for Deadpool 3. However, with one X-Men actor appearing in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the doorway is undoubtedly open for any number of brand favourites to return.
