Speculation about whether there will be a Back to the Future Part 4 has taken the internet by storm. The increasing popularity of Back to the Future: The Musical and the upcoming 40th anniversary of the original movie have made Marty McFly and Doc Brown the topic of conversation again.
Many have been mesmerized by the science fiction movies and TV shows. The anticipation for the fourth installment of Back to the Future had people abuzz, yet sadly it never happened, leaving fans with a lingering sense of curiosity.
The Legacy of Back To The Future
Back to the Future is renowned as a milestone in American filmmaking and is regarded as one of the finest. Directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Zemeckis and Bob Gale, this 1985 American science fiction movie is a true classic.
The storyline for the franchise is set in the year 1985. It revolves around Marty McFly, a young teen who is accidentally sent back to 1955 after an unexpected journey in a time-traveling DeLorean car, which was created by his unusual scientist friend Emmett Brown.
Marey’s inadvertent action of stopping his future parents from becoming romantically involved puts his existence in danger. Consequently, he must find a way to bring them back together and restore his timeline.
Back to the Future Part 4 Cast
In 1980, Gale and Zemeckis had hopes of making a successful flick after their past attempts had all flopped. Unfortunately, they were refused constantly, until Universal Pictures agreed to a deal. Initially, Michael J. Fox was lined up to play the role of Marty, yet due to his unavailability, Eric Stoltz was cast instead.
Zemeckis decided that Stoltz was not a good fit for the part. To acquire Fox for the role, he was forced to re-shoot certain scenes, raising the budget by an additional $4 million.
There is widespread speculation among franchise fans that a fourth installment might be released in theaters in 2024 with Tom Holland in the main part, due to a new ‘trailer’ circulating on YouTube.
The fan-made trailer for Back to the Future Part 4 highlights Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox re-experiencing their time-traveling exploits from the initial three movies, with Tom Holland playing ‘Jake McFly’ and interacting with Fox.
The video description for Back to the Future Part 4
“In Back to the Future Part 4, Tom Holland takes on the role of a brilliant young inventor, Jake McFly, who stumbles upon Doc Brown’s long-lost journal. The journal contains secrets to enhance time travel capabilities, opening up new possibilities and unforeseen consequences.
“As Jake navigates through various timelines, he encounters both familiar faces and new challenges, all while trying to prevent a mysterious adversary from rewriting history.”
Michael J. Fox Speaks About Back To The Future Part 4
The star of the Back to the Future trilogy is no longer in the acting profession, instead devoting his time to his family and furthering the cause of Parkinson’s Disease research.
Back in 2023, when Fox did the media rounds to publicize his documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, the question of whether a Back to the Future Part 4 or a reboot of the original would be made was sure to arise.
During his interview with Variety, he said,
“I don’t think it needs to be [rebooted or revived]. I think Bob and Bob [director and co-writer Robert Zemeckis and co-writer Bob Gale] have been really smart about that. I don’t think it needs rebooting because are you going to clarify something? You’re going to find a better way to tell the story? I doubt it.”
Fox is not keen on a reboot and seems to have no opinion on whether the franchise will move forward without him, while Lloyd is more willing to consider the possibility of a new story.
Throughout the years, Lloyd has welcomed the prospect of playing Doc Brown again. However, he has also strongly emphasized that for a fourth movie to be successful, the narrative would have to be perfect.
In May, Llyod spoke to Variety regarding his desire to work in a possible Back to the Future Part 4.
“I would love to do a sequel, but I think Bob Zemeckis and [producer Steven] Spielberg felt that they told the story in the three episodes. But if somebody has a brilliant idea that would justify a fourth film it might happen.”
Robert Zemeckis, the director, has expressed very firmly that he has no intention of taking part in crafting a fourth installment in the series.
When Michael J. Fox, the lead actor, mentioned he would be excited to come back for the right story in 2018, Zemeckis told a foreign entertainment website that a Back to the Future Part 4 would “never” happen, and the two key people behind the franchise agree in not doing any reboots or remakes.
