The biggest blockbusters of this summer, Barbie and Oppenheimer created the loudest buzz for their double-feature release on July 21, 2023. Now that the movies have been released and are well-received by audiences and critics alike, it seems likely that these star-studded movies will make it to the Oscar nominations. Let’s see what awards could these two movies be nominated for.
Oscar Nominations for Barbie
Greta Gerwig’s biggest directorial project is set to cross a billion-dollar mark in box office collection soon. Margot Robbie’s stellar performance in the movie has caught everybody’s attention and Ryan Gosling’s portrayal of Ken has also garnered him a lot of love. Let’s take a look at what potential Oscar nominations or awards the movie could bag-
Best Original Song
The movie’s songs were already a hit on TikTok and Instagram Reels. People all over the world were creating their versions of Barbie and Ken and dancing to the groovy tunes of the movie. Sam Smith’s I’m Just Ken, Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s Barbie World, Dua Lipa’s Dance The Night, and Billie Eilish’s soulful track What Was I Made For are just a few on the long list of the movie’s original scores that could make it to the Oscars.
Best Hair & Make Up
Margot Robbie’s look as the popular Mattel doll was beautifully captured by the hair and make-up team behind the movie. The perfect blonde hair, rosy cheeks, and accurate accessorization took the movie’s direction a notch higher.
Best Costume Design
We cannot stress this enough, the costume-designing team behind Barbie did a tremendous job. There were so many callbacks to the iconic dolls and actual doll costumes throughout the movie. And two-time Oscar winner costume designer, Jacqueline Durran is on her way to grab a third Academy Award.
Production Design
The surreal world of Barbie Land was wonderfully brought to life by six-time Oscar nominee, Sarah Greenwood. The sheer brilliance of the production design and accuracy in replicating the real dollhouse deserves an award or at least a seventh nomination to Greenwood’s credit.
Best Supporting Actress
It comes as no surprise that America Ferrera did a brilliant job as Gloria. Her monologue alone is enough to win her a nomination.
Best Supporting Actor
We think we all agree that Ryan Gosling‘s portrayal of Ken was not something anyone saw coming. Gosling played the role so brilliantly, and many believe that he will be the one taking home the Oscar.
Best Actress
Without a doubt, Margot Robbie‘s Barbie was beautiful. However, Margot did not just bring the looks to the character, she was also able to portray the naive doll who evolves into a woman going through all sorts of emotions throughout the movie. Her performance as the leading character deserves a nod from the Academy Award jury.
Best Adapted Screenplay
It was quite enthralling to see Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach bringing Barbie’s story to life through their brilliant writing and directing skills. And it wasn’t just the attempt, they ended up delivering the screenplay so wonderfully for which they deserve an Oscar.
Best Director
We’ll say give the Oscar to Greta Gerwig for the best director this year. She did an impeccable job of delivering a true masterpiece to the audience. There was a lot of hype created around the movie before its release, regardless, Gerwig’s directorial project went over and beyond all the hype.
Best Picture
As one of the most highly anticipated movies of the summer, Barbie has broken the box-office collections for a film by a female director. It will not be a surprise if the movie makes it to the Best Picture nominations at the Oscars.
Oscar Nominations for Oppenheimer
Christopher Nolan is known for giving his audience a theatrical experience, and he did just that with Oppenheimer. Cillian Murphy starrer biography has garnered both the director and the actors much-deserved critical acclaim. Here are our predictions for possible Oscar awards and nominations.

Ellen Mirojnick’s costume design for Oppenheimer was bang on. She managed to capture the aesthetics of the early 1940s through the cast’s wardrobe quite wonderfully.
Best Visual Effects
The way Nolan used real elements to create the visuals throughout the movie was quite brilliant. His aversion towards CGI might seem controversial but he still managed to deliver some gorgeous visuals throughout the movie.
Best Sound
The explosion sound alone is enough to grant an entry to the movie in the Best Sound category at the Oscars. Don’t you agree?
Best Production Design
It was an experience to see the township of Los Alamos come to life right in front of our eyes. There is no doubt that the production designing team deserves a nod for their work.
Best Cinematography
The visuals were one of the most stunning aspects of the movie. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema delivered a blend of impactful and gorgeous cinematography and should be credited for it by the Academy.
Best Original Score
Ludwig Goransson’s hauntingly beautiful score added an atmosphere of intensity and curiosity among the viewers. The Oscar-winning composer is sure to earn a nomination for his beautiful work.
Best Editing
American film editor, Jennifer Lame is sure to earn a nomination for her wonderful editing work for Nolan’s 3-hour long featurette.
Best Supporting Actor
Robert Downey Jr managed to steal the show with such a powerful performance as Lewis Strauss. It would be a surprise if the widely popular Hollywood actor does not make it to the Oscar nominations under this category.
Best Actor
Cillian Murphy has been a seasoned actor for quite a while, however, Oppenheimer has given him the platform to let the world know what he’s capable of. His portrayal of J Robert Oppenheimer might be his entry to the Academy Award winners list.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Nolan’s adaptation of American Prometheus might be the best project of his career. A Best Adapted Screenplay nominee is surely headed his way.
Best Director
Christopher Nolan is undoubtedly a deserving candidate for the Best Director category. While Greta Gerwig is on her way to creating history with the largest box office collection by a female-led director, Nolan’s experience and expertise cannot be denied.
Best Picture
Just like the box office wars, Barbenheimer will certainly have an Oscar war. Both movies are beautifully picturized and realised on the big screen. Oppenheimer has already started garnering critical acclaim for its authenticity and brilliant performances. If not the award, a nomination is certainly on its way.
