The eagerly awaited series The Last of Us premiered on HBO a few weeks ago, but things haven’t always gone smoothly. Hackers have recently attacked the game on which the television series is based, claims Kaspersky.
A privately held cybersecurity firm, Kaspersky, has issued a warning that, as a result of the start of the series, scams involving the videogame franchise are probably going to rise sharply.
Kaspersky’s experts recently discovered two distinct malicious operations, one involving the installation of malware on PCs as well as a phishing scam to collect sensitive financial data, including banking information.
Clever attempts to scam people using evolved methods
The first fraud includes a website that appears to let users download a game named “The Last of Us Part II,” but it is nothing more than a sophisticated ruse. It will infect each anyone who tries to download it with malware. Most of the time, while attempting to download a well-known game from a subpar website rather than purchasing it on the legitimate one, users end up with harmful malware on their devices that steal private information.
Further, Kaspersky cautioned that malware could remain undetected on users’ devices for years following infection. Users won’t be aware that something is incorrect because it might not affect them physically while working silently.
A website that claims to provide an access code for the Playstation game “The Last of Us” or sometimes just “The Last of Us download” is the focus of the next scam. The site, which is a phishing site, promises a “gift” along with the code, such as a PS5 or even an expensive Roblox gift voucher. Users need to pay a fee or commission to receive the gift and the ticket. The phishing site prompts the victim to personal input data, including login passwords and credit card information, to process the payment.
How to stay safe from these evolved cyber frauds?
Scammers are estimated to be focusing on new HBO series viewers since they might be less knowledgeable about the most recent release and cybersecurity procedures than more seasoned viewers and participants in the franchise.
Cybercriminals are becoming more sophisticated and inventive in their attempts to deprive you of your financial liberties as time changes. Kaspersky advises that you set up two-factor authentication and consistently use secure passwords to protect yourself and your information. Also, since most apps, software & operating systems include built-in security updates, we advise keeping them all current.
