Britney Spears claimed that as a result of how her family has treated her, she no longer believes in God.
In a voice memo posted on Instagram on Monday, the “Toxic” singer, who spent nearly 14 years under a conservatorship overseen by her father and in which he controlled nearly every aspect of her life, discussed losing her faith.
“God would not allow that to happen to me if a God existed,” she said, according to Page Six, which transcribed the audio before it was deleted. “I don’t believe in God anymore because of the way my children and my family have treated me. There is nothing to believe in anymore. I’m an atheist, y’all.”
Her teenage son, Jayden James, who recently discussed their relationship in an interview with the Daily Mail, was the main subject of the voice message.
This month, Jayden turns 16 and Sean Preston, his older brother, turns 17. Kevin Federline, Spears’ ex-husband with whom she had the two boys and who has primary custody of them, was also questioned.
The June wedding of their mother to Sam Asghari was not attended by the two teenagers. While Jayden and his brother no longer spend time with their mother, they do plan to get back in touch when she is “mentally better.”
He also defended his grandfather Jamie Spears, claiming that when he put Spears in the conservatorship, he “was just trying to be a father.”
Spears has spoken about the abuse she endured under the legal arrangement, which had allowed her father to impose personal, financial, and health decisions, as well as how she raised her children for more than ten years, ever since a judge released her from the conservatorship in November.
Spears has frequently charged her mother, sister, and other family members with failing to look out for and support her.
“It saddens me not one of you have valued me as a person,” she said of her sons in the clip. “You’ve witnessed how my family has been to me, and that’s all you know. Like I said, I feel you all secretly like to say something’s wrong with me.”
