USC freshman guard Bronny James, son of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, has decided to forgo his remaining collegiate eligibility and stay in the 2024 NBA draft. Rich Paul, CEO of Klutch Sports, confirmed the decision to ESPN just hours before the NCAA deadline.
Bronny James: A Promising Prospect
Bronny James, ranked as the No. 54 prospect in the ESPN 100, has shown significant progress during the pre-draft process, elevating his standing from a fringe to a draftable prospect. Paul emphasized Bronny James’ potential, stating, “He’s a really good prospect who has a lot of room for growth. It only takes one team… I do care about the plan, the development.”
Impressive Combine Performance
At the NBA draft combine in Chicago, Bronny James tested as one of the fastest and most explosive athletes, ranking second among 71 participants in two 3-point shooting drills. He also scored 13 points in a combine team scrimmage, showcasing his explosiveness and improving perimeter shooting ability during a pro day at the Lakers’ practice facility.
Overcoming Health Challenges
Bronny James’ freshman season at USC was disrupted by a cardiac arrest episode in July, which led to a procedure to treat a congenital heart defect. Despite this setback, he made his college debut in mid-December, averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. His season was cut short, but he received medical clearance to be drafted by the NBA’s Fitness to Play Panel on the eve of the draft combine.
Strategic Planning for Team Workouts
With the NBA draft set for June 26-27, Paul and his team are strategizing which team workouts to conduct. “We’re still figuring it out,” Paul told ESPN. “Many teams have called. It’s a matter of hashing out workouts and figuring out who is real and who is not.”
Potential Landing Spots and Expectations
Given his father’s legacy, there has been significant speculation about Bronny James potentially joining the Lakers. However, Paul clarified, “The Lakers need to look at Bronny like everyone else. If they value him enough and he’s there, that’s great. If it’s not the Lakers, that’s great.”
Paul also highlighted that Bronny James is far from a finished product but has a promising start. “I’m not putting unrealistic expectations on Bronny… I don’t see him not getting drafted, but if it got to a point where the situations didn’t make sense and we needed to go undrafted, that’s fine.”
Looking Ahead
Bronny James‘ decision to stay in the NBA draft marks a significant step in his basketball journey. With his impressive athleticism, improved skills, and strategic planning, he is well-positioned to make his mark in the NBA. As the draft approaches, all eyes will be on which team will seize the opportunity to develop this promising young talent.
