The Popularity of Bungo Stray Dogs
2016 and has since produced four successful seasons, a movie, and a spin-off anime called Bungo Stray Dogs Wan!
Each season has generated better reviews than the previous, with their MyAnimeList scores only increasing. Despite not being finished yet, season four is currently the highest-rated season, with a score of 8.64.
Much of Bungo Stray Dog’s success can easily be attributed to its captivating writing and storytelling that appeals to a wide range of people. The series mixes several genres, including action, mystery, supernatural, and comedy.
There are themes of superpowers and organized crime, and the series even dabbles in classic literature references, broadening its audience to many anime fans.
The Plot of Bungo Stray Dogs
The story initially follows a boy named Atsushi, who is plagued by visions of a tiger that he has yet to understand. By chance, he encounters a man named Dazai, who just happens to be in search of the very tiger harassing Atsushi, leading them to team up reluctantly.
As Atsushi attempts to understand what this tiger wants, learn about the new powers acquired, and more, Dazai introduces him to the Armed Detective Agency and an entirely new world of crime and mystery.
Will There Be a Season 5?
As of the time of this article, Bungo Stray Dogs has not been renewed for a fifth season. However, that is not to say that it won’t be. With anime, it can take weeks, months, or even years before a new season is announced.
Judging by the gaps between Bungo Stray Dog seasons in the past, it could be that anime fans will have to be patient until the announcement is made. Right now, it seems that a new season seems to come out every three to four years, so it could be that the anime is trying to allow the manga to run to build up more source material.
This often happens when the anime catches up to the manga series but does not continue by making up its original storylines. With these last few episodes, the anime will probably finish with close to enough source material for another 12-13 episode season left over.
Considering how popular and consistent the Bungo Stray Dogs anime is, chances are it will likely get renewed for a fifth season. With other popular series like My Hero Academia and Sk8 the Infinity Season 2 on their roster, it could be that Studio Bones needs time to wrap up other projects before announcing season five.
With the way it looks like season four may end on a cliffhanger, though, I would expect an announcement sooner rather than later. Regardless of how long it takes for season five to get the green light, fans will surely rejoice when it does.
