Disney’s Captain Marvel opened with a magical $188 million opening after grossing $39 million on Sunday. This, combined with its international box office success, Captain Marvel stands at $456 million worldwide.
By the end of its second week, the film is expected to hit $750 million globally and may break-even in its box office cycle on its marketing costs and net production and costs of around $300 million.
Will Captain Marvel Reach $1 Billion Worldwide?
With this been said, a $1 billion box office run isn’t really out of question at the moment, as the final box office budget of Captain Marvel domestically should be around $400 million.
Disney is currently having a dream time with MCU and other Disney live-action remakes. Towards the end of the month, we have Dumbo that is believed to open around $75 million.
The opening weekend went ahead the two Ant-Man films, all Thor ones, initial two Captain America films, The Hulk, two Iron Man films, both Guardians films, DC’s Man of Steel, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Aquaman, both Deadpool films and every single X-Men film.
Disney has been better at marketing than Warner Bros.
Disney has always been excellent with its promotion, which places it a step ahead of DC. After the massive trailer launch of Captain Marvel last year in September, they did a sales stunt for tickets tied into the CFP Championship and Golden Globes. This got them the 3rd best advance sales of tickets for an MCU films on Fandango. Just behind Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War.
We also saw cool Hasbro and Funko POP figures featuring the beloved cat, Goose. The film was also positioned towards the military as it saw star Brie Larson thanking all who played a mentor to her in preparing for the role. Many Air Force personnel were present for the premiere of Captain Marvel, with perfume we by L7 and Bush, alongside a Twitter live stream Q&A with the cast.
Shazam vs Captain Marvel: Who will win?
On the other hand, Shazam’s marketing has been pretty quiet and although the film seems to have potential and good humour, we don’t believe it will go on to break or build any records at the box office. Ironically, Shazam is the original Captain Marvel but it seems like right now, Marvel’s Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel is winning the fight at the big stage.
Moreover, much of Shazam’s anticipation has been shredded by the release of Avengers: Endgame, which comes out days after. Endgame is likely to break all box office records.
