Captain Marvel is easily one of the most awaited movies of 2019. Teased at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, the movie is all set to hit the theatres on the 8th of March. Early reviews for the movie are now coming in – and what you see on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB may just spoil the mood! Here is a look at some of those reviews.
Being the first female-led MCU movie, expectations are high from Captain Marvel. However, based on these early reviews, some critics feel a little let down. Let us take a closer look at this Brie Larson starrer.
Captain Marvel Review: Storyline and Plot
Marvel’s latest addition to the MCU is all set to take place before the events of the Infinity War. The story will show the origin and background of Captain Marvel and will introduce the fans to the woman who is just about to save the MCU! The movie is set in the 80s and the 90s where Carol Danvers teams up with Nick Fury.
Later in the movie, Carol Danvers becomes Captain Marvel. Most of the juicy details about the movie are still under the wraps. However, we know that somewhere in the movie we will see Larson getting involved in the battle between the Kree and the Skrull alien races.
Also an interesting bit of a *SPOILER*: fans of the TV series ‘Friends’ might be in for a delight as these episodes are seen playing in the background!
Captain Marvel: Early Reviews
Early reviews for Captain Marvel are quite a mixed bag! While some viewers have loved the movie, others have blasted through it. Critics have pointed out that various aspects of the movie have been shown really well.
These include Carol Danvers’ relationship with Nick Fury, the setting of the 80s/90s – as well as her cat! The cat plays quite a significant role, we suspect based on the Captain Marvel reviews.
Some initial #CaptainMarvel reactions:
1. Cat people will love this movie.
2. Several truly magnificent music moments for this 90s kid.
3. Carol's hero moment was very cathartic/true to the female experience, imho.
4. The MCU feels more complete now that Carol is in it. ♥️— kayti burt (@kaytiburt) February 20, 2019
Critics have also commented that while Captain Marvel does have a female lead, it is not a typical ‘woman empowerment’ movie. It is in fact, a movie about the empowerment of self, journalist Markeia McCarty stated.
Captain Marvel: Comic Book Fans Upset
While critics have been praising the movie – it has upset the comic book fans. A large segment of the viewers wants the events of the movie to be quite similar to that of thecomic books. However, it appears that Marvel failed on that front.
A large number of negative Captain Marvel reviews have hit Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB – particularly from hardcore comic fans. These fans are saying that Marvel has ‘destroyed the franchise’ with this movie. One of them even alleged that Marvel is paying the critics for good reviews while the movie is “dreadful”.
Captain Marvel in Avengers: Endgame
Captain Marvel is all set to play a major role in Avengers: Endgame. While the previous Avengers movie was all about Thanos destroying the Avengers, this movie will witness a comeback. Captain Marvel releases on the 8th of March and Avengers: Endgame comes out on the 26th of April, 2019!
