Casper Ruud is a pro tennis player who became the highest-ranked Norwegian in history on September 12, 2022, when he reached his career-high singles position of world number 2.
In addition to finishing second in three majors (the 2022 French Open, 2022 US Open, and 2023 French Open) and the 2022 ATP Finals, he has won twelve ATP Tour singles titles.
Early Life
Casper Ruud was born on December 22, 1998, in Norway. He is the son of Christian Ruud, a former professional tennis player, and Lele Ruud.
He shares a love of golf with his father and has two sisters, Caroline and Charlotte. Rafael Nadal was his favorite tennis player while growing up in Baerum’s Snarøya neighborhood.
Casper Ruud’s Tennis Career
As the first player from Norway to rank in the top 10, Casper Ruud has cemented his place on the tennis scene by surpassing his father, Christian Ruud, who was ranked 39th in the world.
Ruud Jr. fared poorly in junior Slam singles competitions in 2015, although he did advance to the Wimbledon boys’ semifinals alongside Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia.
Early in 2016, the young player won the Osaka Mayors Cup, which propelled him to the top of the global rankings. He and Kecmanovic then advanced to the Roland-Garros semifinals.
With several Futures titles and the clay-court ATP Challenger event in Seville, the Norwegian prodigy made a spectacular debut on the professional circuit in 2016.
He didn’t reach his first ATP Tour final until April 2019, losing to Cristian Garin at the U.S. Clay Court Championships in Houston.
He did break his ATP Tour duck the next year when he defeated Pedro Sousa in straight sets in the final of the Argentinian Open in Buenos Aires.
Casper Ruud had an incredible year the next year, becoming the highest-ranked Norwegian in history with five ATP 250 championships, all on clay.
He advanced to his first Masters 1000 final at Indian Wells in April 2022 but lost to Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets. He then advanced to the French Open final two months later, but Rafael Nadal, who won a record 14th Roland-Garros title, gave him little chance.
Later that year, Ruud advanced to the US Open final, demonstrating his versatility away from clay, but once more, he was defeated by Alcaraz. But because of his accomplishments, he rose to the second position in the international rankings.
He defeated his former doubles partner Kecmanovic in the Estoril Open final in 2023, but that was his only victory. After that, he defeated Olympic champion Alexander Zverev in straight sets to go to a second French Open final, but Novak Djokovic easily defeated him.
Casper Ruud had his sixth straight final loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas after defeating the world number one at the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters. He won the Barcelona Open after defeating the Greek to halt that streak.

Casper Ruud has been dating Maria Galligani since 2018. In November 2024, the couple announced their engagement via social media. Galligani has often been seen accompanying Ruud throughout his many tennis competitions.
