Biography
Giff Smith hails from Mableton, Georgia, where he was born on October 12, 1968. He also attended Georgia Southern University and is a three-time All-American defensive end.
NFL Career
In 1991, Giff Smith began his coaching journey at Arkansas where he served as a graduate assistant for two years. He then spent a brief season with Georgia in 1994 before moving on to be the wide receiver coach at Georgia Southern from 1996 to 1998.
Despite spending only two years there, he also moved to Tulane in 1999. During his time at Tulane, he held the position of defensive line coach for four years before transitioning to Georgia Tech in 2004. He continued to work as a defensive line coach at Georgia Tech for five seasons until 2009.
In 2010, he transitioned to the Buffalo Bills of the NFL and took on the role of a defensive line coach. While with the Bills, he was under the guidance of Chan Gailey.
He served as the Bills’ coach for two seasons before departing from the team in 2012. Following a two-year hiatus, he resumed his coaching career with the Tennessee Titans in 2014.
After leaving in 2015, Giff Smith returned to Los Angeles in 2016 and held various coaching positions. Initially, Smith served as the defensive line coach for five seasons.
In 2022, he transitioned to a new role within the club and became the outside linebackers coach, working under Brandon Staley. On December 15, he was named the interim head coach for the Angeles after Staley’s departure.
At present, the coach is acting as both interim head coach and outside linebackers coach for the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL.
For 12 years, Smith has been a coach in the NFL and during this time, he has assisted five players in earning a total of 10 Pro Bowl selections. Among these players is Khalil Mack, who is considered one of the top players in Angeles, and Smith helped him secure a spot on the AFC starting lineup.
