Recently, comedian Matt Rife caused a stir when he had an altercation with Bunny Hedaya’s 6-year-old son. Last month, Matt Rife became the center of a controversy when he began his Netflix debut show with a joke regarding domestic violence.
Who is Matt Rife?
In 2023, Matt Rife’s comedic crowd work took the internet by storm when it went viral on TikTok, causing him to gain rapid fame. His career as a comedian began at 19 when he was featured on MTV’s improvisational sketch comedy and rap show Wild ‘n Out.
In addition to appearing on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Fresh Off the Boat, Matt’s career skyrocketed in July 2022 thanks to TikTok. This allowed him to release his self-produced comedy special, Only Fans, earlier in 2021.
His comedic videos becoming wildly popular on a social media app resulted in the comic receiving a Netflix special and touring the world.
Matt Rife’s Controversial Saga
On November 15, 2023, the release of Matt Rife‘s Natural Selection sparked a great deal of debate. The controversy was due to the inclusion of a domestic violence joke at the start of the special, which made many uncomfortable.
Matt recounted a tale about him and a friend visiting a restaurant, where the server had a bruised eye. They questioned if the female should have been in the kitchen rather than interacting with customers. He said,
“Yeah, but I feel like if she could cook, she wouldn’t have that black eye.”
Many viewers expressed their outrage on social media, criticizing the comedian for his misogynistic remarks. Just one week before the debut of his special, Matt informed Variety that he wanted to make sure people understood he wasn’t trying to please women, as his fanbase at that point was mainly composed of women.
He stated,
“One thing that I wanted to tackle in this special was showing people that, like, despite what you think about me online, I don’t pander my career to women. I would argue this special is way more for guys.”
Matt Rife Gets Slammed For His Comments To A 6 Yr Old
Matt recently responded to a 6-year-old boy in an online altercation. Bunny Hedaya, a well-known TikToker, posted a video on the 9th of December stating that her son, who is passionate about outer space, was involved in a quarrel with Matt.
The video contained a clip of her son responding to a joke from Matt’s special, poking fun at astrology enthusiasts. Matt said,
“Just because Jupiter has a ring, and you don’t, doesn’t mean that’s what you’re supposed to look up to for this magical advice.”
To which Bunny Hedaya’s six-year-old son responded,
“Actually, it’s Saturn that has the rings. It has more [visible rings] also. And, you’re mean to girls.”
Bunny posted a picture of a comment, which was from Matt on her son’s video.
“Jupiter also has [a] ring. OH!… and Santa [Claus] isn’t real. Your mom buys you presents with the money she makes on OnlyFans. Good luck.”
Many of the viewers on the TikTok video were very vocal about their admiration for Bunny and her son, with one person leaving a comment saying,
“Matt rife being a comedian who can’t take a joke is the funniest thing about him.”
Another added,
“I thought Matt Rife couldn’t go any lower 😭😭😭”
A user wrote,
