Constance Wu is the first Asian woman in almost 44 years who has been nominated for Golden Globe best lead actress.
Wu was ecstatic but shocked when she got to know about her nomination for Crazy Rich Asians role. The Hollywood film also got a nomination in the category of best film musical or comedy. The movie was the first one to feature an all-Asian cast in twenty five years.
The movie has already earned $238m worldwide since it was first premiered in the month of August. Jon M Chu, the director of the movie, tweeted to share his joy and said that the twin nominations were his career’s proudest moment.
There are four other actresses that are competing for the title of the best actress in a film musical or comedy. Before Constance Wu, Yvonne Elliman was the last Asian who got nominated in this category for her role in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ back in 1974. This was reported by the Hollywood Foreign Press Asociation.
Constance Wu said that she didn’t even think about the nomination and here she is. She said,
I’d never seen it happen to an Asian American woman before. So I didn’t think [it would happen to me].
Kevin Kwan, the author of the book that was adapted into the movie congratulated the cast and Wu for the historic nomination. The movie is about the story of an Asian-American woman who meets the ultra-wealthy family of her boyfriend in Singapore and gets a culture shock.
The movie has got a lot of appreciation by the audience and many have said that it is a big win for Asian-American representation in the world of Hollywood. Well, it’s not only Wu who is surprised with the nomination. This happened after almost half a century.
