Rick & Morty’s Big Screen Adventure: What’s Next?
Ever since its inception in 2013, Rick & Morty has amassed a significant cult following, leading to speculations about its transition to the big screen. The potential for a movie based on the quirky escapades of the dysfunctional duo has been the talk of the town. Now, series creator Dan Harmon provides an intriguing update.
Harmon on a Rick & Morty Cinematic Adventure
Conversations with creators often bring forth the visions and strategies they have in mind. Harmon’s recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter did just that, shedding light on the highly anticipated Rick & Morty film adaptation. Quoting Harmon’s vision for the film:
“My philosophy would be to just take a Rick and Morty adventure, and spend a bunch of extra money on it and make it 90 minutes long. Not to try to earn its feature status by virtue of canonical dramatic tone shifts or anything like that, but rather to just make it a super badass episode of Rick and Morty.”
He also stressed the importance of maintaining the core essence of the show:
“I think less is more there because then we can let our animators go nuts, and the animation can be fancier and there can be crazy sequences and stuff.”
Emphasizing the stand-alone nature of the potential film, he added:
“It’s best that way, because I don’t think it should be this canonical thing that relies on the series to do things and changes everything after that. I think it should actually be the equivalent of Raiders of the Lost Ark, where the idea was, ‘Hey, Indiana Jones already exists as a series in George Lucas’ imagination, so Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark is simply his greatest adventure yet.”
What Lies Ahead for Rick & Morty Fans?
Fans can only wonder about the movie’s direction. But if it gets greenlit, we can expect a feature rich in classic Rick & Morty tropes, drawing parallels to other expanded episode adaptations like South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut. And while the cast for the titular characters remains a mystery since Justin Roiland‘s dismissal, the upcoming Rick & Morty season 7, set to premiere on October 15, might provide hints.
With Harmon at the helm, there is a potential for the movie to embody the heart and soul of the series while offering a grander, more immersive experience. Though official confirmation is still pending, Harmon’s enthusiasm and clear vision suggest that Rick & Morty’s big-screen debut is not just a pipe dream.
