Danny Trejo may play tough guys on screen, but he has a soft spot for his family and loves to celebrate their successes.
The actor from the Machete movies recently used social media to congratulate his son Gilbert on a big accomplishment. On July 17, Trejo’s son, who was 34 at the time, had been clean for eight years.
My son Gilbert Trejo has 8 years clean and sober today! I love you so much, and am so proud of the man you’ve become. Any parents out there with children struggling with addiction, I didn’t think my son was going to make it and today he’s my best friend! There is hope! pic.twitter.com/E2m2ggfIiQ

The actor knows a lot about the sober way of life because he has been sober for more than 50 years. He was only eight years old when he tried pot for the first time. He had his first drink when he was 12, and by the time he was 14, he was shooting heroin.
After years of going in and out of jail and going to a lot of 12-step groups, he decided to become sober when he was 24 years old. He finally chose to be a drug counselor.
He shared:
Everything from Aug. 23, 1968 to now is just like a dream. I’ve got nothing to complain about. I’ve got nothing to fix.
Even now, Trejo is still a supporter of getting better. He is also very honest about how hard it is to stay sober.
Gilbert, we are so happy to congratulate you! The fact that eight years have passed is a big deal. We hope that your success keeps getting better and better.
