David Beckham is in the news, and not for the best reasons. He talked about the England Lionesses in a video message and used the word ‘girls’, making people extremely unhappy.
Lionesses Triumph and David Beckham’s Backlash
The Lionesses, the England women’s football team, beat Australia and made it to the World Cup finals. People were happy and many famous people praised them on social media.
However, David Beckham‘s message got a lot of negative reactions.
In the video, he said, “Hey girls! What a tournament it’s been. It’s been so much fun to watch and we’re all so proud as a nation of what you’ve achieved already.”
He talked about how he’s proud of them and how the whole nation supports them. But many people didn’t like that he called them ‘girls’.
We received a very special message ahead of our #FIFAWWC semi-final… 😍

Some people said, ”
Why girls?? They are women out there!!!” Another person said, “It’s WOMEN not girls.” They wanted him to say ‘women’ because they are grown-ups, not girls.
But some people defended Beckham. They said when they watch football, they say ‘girls’ or ‘boys‘ for both men and women’s teams. They thought it wasn’t a big deal.
Mixed Reactions
People had different opinions about this thinking it was not a big problem. They said when they watch men’s football, they also say ‘boys’. So, they didn’t think it was wrong.
But others said it’s important to call them ‘women’ because they are grown-ups. They thought it was not respectful to use the word ‘girls’.
England’s women’s team will play against Spain in the World Cup finals on August 20th. If they win, it will be a big moment for England, like the men’s team winning in 1966.
