After graduating in 1982, David Tepper secured a position in the treasury division at Republic Steel in Ohio. He was then hired by Keystone Mutual Funds in Boston after two years.
In 1985, he joined Goldman Sachs as a credit analyst and quickly rose to the position of head trader in just six months. He played a crucial role in helping Goldman Sachs weather the 1987 market crash. However, he left the company in 1992.
At the start of 1993, he and his fellow Goldman Sachs employee Jack Walton joined forces to establish Appaloosa Management. The firm specializes in investing in public stocks and fixed-income markets globally and experienced impressive growth in its initial stages.
Within just six months, it yielded a 57% return on its investments and by 1996, its assets had grown from $300 million in 1994 to $450 million in 1995 and $800 million in 1996.
Over the years, it experienced continuous growth, and by 2014, the value of its assets being managed surpassed $20 billion. The organization primarily focuses on investing in struggling companies’ debts. Its initial investment was in a bankrupt steel company.
Despite experiencing significant losses after the junk bond market crash of 2002, Appaloosa eventually bounced back over the following years by investing in struggling companies such as Enron, Worldcom, and Marconi Corp.
Aside from his focus on business, David Tepper also has a passion for football. In September 2009, he acquired a 5% share in the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League.
In 2018, Tepper bought the Carolina Panthers of the NFL from Jerry Richardson, the team’s original owner and founder. As part of the deal, he relinquished his ownership of the Steelers. His offer of $2.2 billion was the largest ever in the history of the NFL.
After acquiring the Panthers in 2018, Tepper announced his ambition to establish an MLS team in Charlotte. His efforts paid off when the city was granted the 30th MLS franchise, known as Charlotte FC, in late 2019.

In 2012, he and his former colleague Alan Fournier established a political advocacy organization called ‘Better Education For Kids’. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, he generously contributed $200,000 in the form of gift cards to assist affected families.

David Tepper tied the knot with Marlene in 1986 and together they had three kids, Brian, Randi, and Casey. However, their marriage ended in divorce in 2016. Three years later, Tepper remarried to Nicole Bronish. Before that, he lived in a humble stone residence located in Livingston, New Jersey.
According to reports, Tepper purchased a beachfront mansion from his ex-supervisor at Goldman Sachs for $43.5 million and had it torn down. He then had a larger house constructed on the same land.
