Josh Brolin’s “Cable” Takes on an Intriguing New Role in the Comics
Fans of Marvel’s Deadpool 2 would remember the imposing presence of Josh Brolin, who added flair to the role of mutant hero Cable. While Brolin’s portrayal of Cable garnered significant attention on the silver screen, the comic world of X-Men has found a way to leverage his stardom in a unique twist.
From Screen to Page: The Brolin Effect
In the blockbuster Deadpool 2 from 2018, Josh Brolin stepped into the shoes of Nathan Summer, commonly known as Cable. His portrayal offered a sharp, realistic contrast to Ryan Reynolds’ vibrant and quirky Deadpool. This dynamic kept audiences on the edge of their seats, establishing a unique camaraderie between the two characters.
Cable, a character equipped with telepathic and telekinetic abilities, combined with an arsenal of weaponry and a warrior’s spirit, has always been a force to reckon with. Such credentials ensure that Cable often finds himself featured in many “best of” lists when talking about the X-Men universe.
Cable’s Ingenious Disguise Strategy
In a recent twist in Children of the Vault #1, authored by Deniz Camp and illustrated by Luca Maresca, the post-apocalyptic scenario saw mutants face grave danger, making Cable’s association with Brolin vital. How, you ask? Thanks to Cable’s telepathic prowess, he can use Brolin’s likeness as a deceptive cover!
As the narrative goes, after a massive attack on the mutants of Krakoa by Orchis, Cable and fellow X-Man, Bishop, find themselves on the run. In a bid to lay low and escape to one of Cable’s safe havens, Cable leverages his telepathic power, making an onlooker believe that he’s actually “Mr. Brolin” from Deadpool 2. The startled fan even goes on to express admiration for the actor, completely unaware of Cable’s real identity.
This is not the first instance of Cable using his telepathic skills. Earlier in the same issue, Cable tweaks the minds of his adversaries to facilitate his escape from Orchis. Given the mutants’ fugitive status, this newfound ability to adopt celebrity likenesses might come in handy in the subsequent issues.
The Hollywood Connection
There remains an element of mystery as to whether Cable chose to project himself as Josh Brolin due to their resemblance or if Deadpool 2 is actually a cinematic entity within Earth-616, the Marvel universe. Regardless, Cable’s strategy of assuming the identity of a Hollywood icon like Brolin showcases not just his cunning, but also a fun intersection of the reel and real worlds.
Fans are eagerly anticipating Brolin’s potential return in the yet-to-come Deadpool 3. The hope is to see him reintroduce Cable to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In the meantime, however, Brolin’s influence continues to resonate in the pages of Children of the Vault.
