Sign language words and the way they are used to communicate have been around since before our time, in the fifth century B.C. Even though it has been around for a long time, it didn’t become common in the West until the 17th century. Now, just like with any other language, the speaker needs to learn more than just the basics of sign language. They also need to know how to show sadness, anger, and disappointment. We are, in fact, talking about cussing. In case you didn’t know, deaf people, swear just like the rest of us, but they can do it a little more quietly. Cut posted a video on YouTube where seven deaf people show how to say some of our favorite swear words in American sign language. It’s so much more fun than just flipping the bird.
Some of the swear words are pretty easy to act out with your hands, and you probably shouldn’t do so in public. Other swear words, on the other hand, are more subtle and could be misunderstood in a number of ways. Lastly, some involve writing out the word by hand using the alphabet signs of sign language. This hides the bad words from people who don’t know what they mean. It’s pretty much the most useful thing you’re likely to learn today (unless you feel like checking out more Cut content).
Watch the video below to see how bad words are signed. Don’t worry, we know you’ll try them all in front of your computer screen. Just make sure that anyone in your family who is deaf, has left the room first.
