Eddie Murphy is the poster boy of a long and successful Hollywood career. Moreover, he has appeared in countless movies and won several awards. It was his time to be rewarded. Hence, Murphy was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 80th annual Golden Globes ceremony. However, Murphy had a joke about Will Smith while accepting the award. It was about the Oscars incident where Smith slapped Chris Rock for making fun of his wife Jada.
HFPA President Helen Hoehne released a statement. She said, “We’re honored to present this year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award to the iconic and highly esteemed Mr. Eddie Murphy. We’re thrilled to be celebrating the lasting impact on film and television that his career — in front of and behind the camera — has had through the decades.”
Murphy begins, “I’ve been in show business for 46 years, and I’ve been in the movie business for 41 years, so this has been a long time in the making and greatly appreciated. I’ve been doing this for a long time so I could literally stand up here and keep saying names until they play the piano, but I’m gonna wrap it up and just say something to all the new up-and-coming dreamers and artists that are in the room tonight.”
Eddie Murphy trolls Will Smith during his Golden Globes 2023 speech
Murphy continues, “I wanna let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity, and peace of mind.” Murphy explained the blueprint of his lengthy and successful career. He continues, “It’s very simple, just do these three things: Pay your taxes, mind your business, and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your fu*king mouth!”
However, he was not the only one to take a dig at the controversial actor. Host Jerrod Carmichael trolled Will Smith as well. He said, “While we were on commercial, we actually presented Will Smith with the Rock Hudson award for best portrayal of masculinity on television.” He continues, “So please give it up for Will Smith. Please! Please!” Smith was banned from the Academy Awards for a decade for slapping Chris Rock last year during the 2022 Oscars. As a result, the Globes left him out this year for his performance as a real-life runaway slave in the Civil War in Apple TV+’s Emancipation. The show earned zero nominations.
