After losing 2-1 to France in the quarterfinals of the Qatar 2022 World Cup this evening, England is now out of the tournament.
On Wednesday, the team of Kylian Mbappé will be going against Morocco at the Al Bayt Stadium for a spot in the final.
After Harry Kane tied the game from the penalty spot right after halftime, Oliver Giroud put France ahead 2-1. The England captain had another chance to answer from the penalty box after Giroud scored.
Kane’s shot from six yards out went over the bar, though.
Football won’t be coming home for yet another tournament, and doubts about Gareth Southgate’s long-term future are likely to start.
Southgate kept the same team for the game against France. Jordan Pickford was in goal, and the defense was formed by Kyle Walker, John Stones, Harry Maguire, and Luke Shaw.
Declan Rice, Jordan Henderson, and Jude Bellingham made up the midfield. The attack position had Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, and the captain, Harry Kane.
Raheen Sterling of Chelsea was also back on the bench, even though he just joined the team yesterday in Qatar.
Armed thieves broke into Sterling’s home, where his wife and children were living at the time. He then went back to the UK.
So, England’s journey is over, but Qatar 2022 still had some great moments.
Gareth Southgate’s team started the tournament with a strong 6-2 win over Iran, but their next game, against the US, was a boring 0-0 draw.
Wales was up next, and the Three Lions beat them easily, sending their rivals home.
After beating Senegal 3-0 in the round of 16, England also didn’t have any trouble with them.
But that was the last part of England’s journey to the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Now, the team is focusing on qualifying for Euro 2024.
