Some people are saying that a Disney movie from the 1990s is “inappropriate” and wouldn’t be released in the modern world.
People seem to always argue about whether things made decades ago should be held to the same standards as they are today.
To put this in perspective, actress Mindy Kaling recently said that characters from the very popular show The Office would be fired in the real world.
But one Disney movie from the 1990s has gotten some bad press because it shows an 11-year-old boy dating an adult woman.
Even by the standards of more than 20 years ago, this seems like it should have been questioned while it was being made.
In the 1994 movie Blank Check, Brian Bonsall plays Preston, an 11-year-old boy who gets into a bike accident with an escaped convict and gets a cool $1 million as a result.
But what most people who see the movie for the first time don’t know is that the story is about a young man named Preston falling in love with a bank teller who is also an FBI agent named Shay Stanley (played by Karen Duffy).
She is, of course, a grown woman as well as an FBI agent who works undercover.
As their story goes on, Shay and Preston spend a lot of time together. At one point, they dance in slow motion in a water fountain and get drenched. They then get in a limo, where the tension is, let’s just say, not right.
But that’s not the end of it. At the end of the movie, Shay actually kisses Preston on the lips and agrees to go on a date with him in six years, when Preston will still be 17 years old.
The movie is now available to stream on Disney+, so people are either watching it for the first time or watching it again to remember what it was like when they were younger.
A user on TikTok named Gio Johnson (@giojohnson) posted pictures from the movie, including a scene where the two characters kiss, and people were shocked.
Watching this as an adult made me uncomfortable,
Gio captioned his post.
It seems like the movie that so many people loved as kids looks very different when seen through the eyes of an adult.
One user commented:
I remember thinking aww how nice of her. Smh. Now I’m horrified,
and a second added:
Thought it was weird back then too.
A third person said:
Did I block that scene out of my head […] lord what did they have us watching,” with a fourth concluding: “Yes I was watching this with my daughter a couple of months ago. Immediately said hell naw.
Another TikToker user also posted movie clips with the following caption:
THIS IS A GROWN WOMAN KISSING AN 11 YEAR OLD BOY. DISNEY EXPLAIN YOURSELF
