Fabiola Valentín, who used to be Miss Puerto Rico, and Mariana Varela, who used to be Miss Argentina, didn’t win a crown at the 2019 pageant, but they each got a ring.
This week, Valentín and Varela said they are now married.
The happy news was shared in an Instagram video that the couple posted together on Sunday. Since then, it has been watched more than 2 million times.
In 2019, they both took part in the pageant, and Valentín placed in the top three.
“After deciding to keep our relationship private, we are opening the doors on a special day. 10/28/22,” the couple wrote in Spanish, noting their wedding date.
In the video that went with it, Valentín and Varela showed clips of them having fun together and walking hand in hand on the beach. They also showed pictures of their engagement with silver and gold balloons that said “Marry Me?” in the background and their rings.
At the end of their video, they showed a clip of the two of them kissing outside the Judicial Center building in San Juan, Puerto Rico, while dressed in white wedding clothes.
Reuters says that Puerto Rico used to be against same-sex marriages, but it stopped defending the ban in 2015 and added more rights for LGBTQ+ people in 2020. The U.S. civil code was changed so that marriage is now seen as a contract between two people, not just a man and a woman.
