There was only a glimpse shown in the trailer about the Golden Company in Game of Thrones season 8. But, what is their purpose that they are being introduced in the final season?
What is GOT’s Golden Company?
The Golden Company has been talked about four times in Game of Thrones. But, A Song of Ice and Fire may give us some more information. Cersei had mentioned that they were the most powerful army in Essos. But, before that King Aegon IV Targaryen son, Aegor Rivers and Daemon I Blackfyre’s sons had left Westeros. He founded the company of sellswords, consisting of soldiers who work for the highest bidder.
In the Game of Thrones’ fourth season, Davos Seaworth had advised Stannis Baratheon to hire 10,000 skilled soldiers to claim the Iron Throne. But, Stannis refuses to do so because of the fact that they are sellswords. But, Davos says, “They have never broken a contract.”
In another episode in GOT season 4, Jorah Mormont advises Daenerys to not trust Daario Naharis due to his sellsword nature. In another episode of season 7, Cersei plans to obtain the Golden Company to retain some of her belongings. And the most important mention of the Golden Company in Game of Thrones was in the season 7 finale. Cersei reveals that she has sent Euron Greyjoy to bring the Golden Company so that they can win the battle. She also mentioned that the Golden Company contains 20,000 men, elephants and horses.
Role of the Golden Company in Game of Thrones season 8?
No confirmed information has been revealed about The Golden Company till now. But, we do have some speculative information. It seems from the trailer that Euron has been successful in bringing the Golden Company to Cersei. We see the ship, the army in it and its Commander on its deck. Its most probably Harry Strickland, played by Marc Rissmann. And they might play a huge role in the war for Westeros.
The battle is expected to take place in the middle of Game of Thrones season 8.
