Who is Azor Ahai?
The Prince Who Was Promised has been mentioned several times throughout Game of Thrones. He was the one who ended the Long Night before. He forged his sword by plunging it into the heart of his beloved wife Nissa Nissa. The creation of Lightbringer cost him dearly.
As per the prophecy,
When the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt to wake dragons out of stone.
The red priestess Melisandre earlier believed that Stannis Baratheon was the Prince Who Was Promised. But after she resurrected Jon Snow from his death in Game of Thrones season 6, she had a change of mind.
Why is this important for Season 8?
The Prince Who Was Promised could be either Daenerys Targaryen or Jon Snow. The two very well fit the description of the prophecy. The Valyrian word could either stand for a prince or a princess. Both of them will have a significant role to play in Game of Thrones season 8.
In order to kill the Night King, one of them would have to sacrifice the other as was done before by Azor Ahai. One of them may eventually kill another to forge their weapon. The creators of the show love to surprise the audience and we see one more coming our way.
