One of Disney+’s most popular shows, The Mandalorian, is highly regarded among the Star Wars fandom. It won many hearts all over the world with the introduction of Baby Yoda who became a meme sensation on the internet. However, Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian is said to have broken one of George Lucas’ rules.
Who Broke George Lucas’ Rule on The Mandalorian?
The Mandalorian‘s Dr Pershing who is played by Omid Abtahi is said to be the rulebreaker. We were introduced to Dr Pershing’s character in Season 1 Episode 3 of the series. Dr Pershing, one of the major recurring characters in the series, is a scientist known for cloning and creating the strand cast. The scientist is employed by the Empire to perform experiments on the Child. However, even after obtaining the biological data from Grogu, Pershing refuses to terminate him.
Over time, Pershing has become a favourite character among the fans. However, after the incidents of Season 3 Episode 3 of the series, his return seems uncertain. Being tricked by the Imperial Spy, Elia Kane played by Katy O’Brian, Pershing’s memory is wiped to deter him from sharing the knowledge of cloning with the Republic. Many fans have speculated that Pershing’s memory may be restored which gives us hopes to see the Star Wars scientist in future episodes.
Which Rule Did The Mandalorian Break?
When George Lucas was creating the Star Wars trilogy, he did not want glasses to appear in the Star Wars universe. Lucas was of the view that the trilogy takes place in a fantasy world where Earth’s innovations such as wheels and glasses are outdated. The idea of characters not wearing glasses sets their universe apart from the Earth. However, Dr Pershing’s character is shown wearing glasses from the very beginning.
While we’ve seen many other comic book and cartoon characters wear glasses in Star Wars, Pershing is the first character to don them in a live-action production. We also see many shades and goggles worn throughout the series, however, the scientist wears slightly-tinted traditional glasses. Although, there is no evidence to show that Pershing is wearing prescription glasses. But we do see him putting on his glasses while scouring through the deserted Star Destroyer with Elia Kane. Would we see Pershing sporting these glasses in future episodes remains a mystery since they’re removed from him while Kane wipes Pershing’s mind with the mind flayer.
Whether the glasses serve a higher purpose than just vision correction for Dr Pershing is yet to be seen. Regardless of Pershing’s eyewear making a comeback, it’s certain that the Star Wars universe is dynamic. The Mandalorian has delivered some unforgettable characters and storylines for the viewers to enjoy. This also tells us that the writers and producers may not be afraid to challenge other canonical aspects of this universe. It is also interesting to see how rigid or flexible are fans to accept these changes.
Will Dr Pershing Return in The Mandalorian?
Dr Pershing has had an interesting arch throughout his journey through the Disney+ series. While he has made a handful of appearances throughout the three seasons of The Mandalorian, Pershing has certainly become a beloved character among fans. He started off as an antagonist who was employed by the Empire for evil gains, however, we’ve also been shown his human side. There may be a redemption brewing in the writer’s room for Pershing where he ends up on the protagonist’s side. After all, he is a brilliant scientist who showed us a moment of compassion with Grogu. It will surely make for a good episode if we see Pershing making a comeback and reversing the mind flayer’s effect.
