The Golden Globes Awards ended on a shocking note as “A Star Is Born” did not get the award for Best Picture. Bohemian Rhapsody turned out to be the surprise winner of the Golden Globes Best Picture award.
The passion project by Bradley Cooper starring Lady Gaga was tipped hotly for taking home multiple gongs, but it took home the award for the Best Original Song only. Bohemian Rhapsody even defeated Bradley Cooper in the category of the Best Actor – Drama. Lady Gaga, on the other hand, lost to The Wife’s Genn Close in the category of Best Actress – Drama.
The critics were totally shocked to hear about it. Many were surprised to hear that Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are The Champions: Queen, won over “A Star Is Born”, which was the crowd’s favourite.
Graham King, the producer of Bohemian Rhapsody, addressed everyone at the end of the night at the Beverly Hills and said,
The power of movies is that it brings us all together. Freddie Mercury and Queen did that so successfully through their music and that’s what we always wanted to accomplish in the cinemas.
He also added that it is humbling to see that this movie has succeeded in bringing that magic to live and the amazing response that it got.
However, the crowd was pretty upset about it. Bohemian Rhapsody was rated poorly by 62% critics. On the other hand, Tomatometer gave “A Star Is Born” 90% and it received 96% of top critics’ approval seal.
Rami Malek even thanked the late singer, whose role he portrayed in the movie. He also thanked Freddie Mercury for giving him such great opportunity and the joy of a lifetime.
Olivia Colman won the award for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for “The Favourite” and gave a stellar speech.
