Yet another milestone is achieved by Google in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Google’s researchers have now trained the company’s algorithm, Lymph Node Assistant to become a valuable asset in detecting cancer. LYNA is trained to recognize characteristics of tumors and is able to identify metastasis in a wide variety of conditions.
As a result, the AI can now tell the difference between non-cancer and cancer slides for almost 99% of the times.
This will definitely bring a major revolution in the field of medical and technology. LYNA will be looking and identifying for late-stage breast cancer where there’s no solution. It will not only cut the inspection time to a single minute but will also half the rate of missed micro-metastases. Since metastases is a common factor in most of the cancers, early detection of it will help enable the doctors to perform more reliable diagnosis.
However, the AI is yet to be implemented in real-life clinical situations. Once its ready for practical use, it will free doctors and help them to focus more of their time on caring for their patients.
