Saying Goodbye to a Beloved Character
Grey’s Anatomy fans were hit with another major blow as Kelly McCreary announced her departure. McCreary has portrayed Maggie Pierce, Meredith Grey’s half-sister and the head of the hospital’s cardiothoracic surgery since the end of Season 10. After nine years on the show, McCreary will leave as a series regular. Her final episode will air on April 13th, but fans may still see her character in future episodes.
A Heartfelt Goodbye
McCreary shared her sentiments on leaving the show: “After nine seasons, I am saying goodbye to Maggie Pierce and her Grey Sloan family. It has been a tremendous honor to be a part of such a legendary television institution as Grey’s Anatomy. I will always be grateful to Shonda Rhimes, Krista Vernoff, and ABC for the opportunity and the incredible fans’ passionate support.”
She continued, “Playing Maggie Pierce has been one of the true joys of my life, and I leave with profound gratitude for every step of this journey. I am excited for this next chapter and what the future holds.”
Unclear Departure
It is still unclear how McCreary’s character, Maggie Pierce, will be written out of the show. In the last episode, Maggie tearfully asked Richard how he and Catherine knew what they were going through “was just a rough patch and it wasn’t something more… malignant.” There may be issues in Maggie’s marriage to Winston, but it is uncertain how this will play out.
Casting News
In other news, Deadline announced a new casting addition to the show.
“Scott Speedman is set to recur in the latter part of Grey’s Anatomy‘s 17th season. He’ll play a mystery man from Meredith Grey’s past.” – Deadline
As Grey’s Anatomy continues to evolve and change, fans will undoubtedly miss McCreary’s character but look forward to what’s next in store for the show.
