Burkhardt is happy to ride his bike for two hours if it means he can spend time with his wife.
“Of course. Nothing can stop me.”
We can never really know how much someone loves someone else.
A 90-year-old man recently went viral for doing something that most lovers can only be jealous of.
Peter Burkhardt, who was born in the Netherlands, showed people what real love is.
And we’re not talking about the biggest acts of kindness that we usually see on social media. It all comes down to the easy ones.
Burkhardt rides his three-wheeled cycler through the busy city.
He takes a one-hour trip to Apeldoorn with all the safety gear on. This daily journey gives him a chance to see his wife of 63 years, who is getting care at a hospice.
Burkhardt doesn’t mind cycling two hours each way to and from work if it means he can spend more time with his wife.
Even the cold couldn’t stop him.
In a video, he said that he could always wear his ski gear to keep the weather off of him.
But when the weather is worse, even for experienced bikers, Burkhardt takes a taxi.
And if his children are around, they drive him there.
I have to take the situation as it is. I just want to be with her every day.
He told the Dutch news site De Stentor about it.
I just can’t miss her. I did it by car for a while. But even then I alternated it with the bike.
Seven years ago, he started doing this.
Once, he thought about driving to see his wife, but his license was not accepted.
He doesn’t have a car either, and gas is pretty expensive these days.
But no one can stop Burkhardt from seeing his wife.
“If there’s a will, there’s a way,” as the saying goes.
For Burkhardt, it was a three-wheeled cycle.
Burkhardt says that his wife has no idea how hard he works to see her.
The tiredness goes away quickly, though, when his wife gives him a big hug.
Burkhardt wanted to bring attention to the state of the bike lanes, as well as the length of the trip.
Even though the lanes are good, they could still be better.
Also, the fact that a man who is 90 years old can make the trip alone shows how well-designed these lanes are.
The video was put on the website Reddit, where it got a lot of attention.
Some commenters said that he could be fitter than most “Redditors” on the website because he knows how to ride a bike.
Others said that cities and governments should set up systems to make it easier and safer for older people to visit each other.
Their children wanted them to keep doing it every day.
I think they keep each other alive with this.
I hope my father inspires other people with this,
said his son.
I want to see her, hear her voice. When I enter the nursing home, I immediately know where she is. She is no longer the same as she was,”
Burkhardt said.
But I’m still in love with her.
