Gwyneth Paltrow won a high-profile court case against a man who said she hit him while skiing. She asked for $1 in damages, which the court gave her.
Back in 2016, Paltrow and Sanderson got into a fight at the Utah ski resort. Sanderson claims that the US actor crashed into him, hurting him badly.
During the eight days of testimony, the case was all over the news, but it didn’t take the jury nearly that long to decide.
The jury decided in favor of the Shakespeare in Love star after only two hours of deliberation.
A source said that they decided that retired optometrist Terry Sanderson was “100%” to blame for the skiing accident.
When the jury gave their decision, the 50-year-old star did not say anything.
In a statement, Gwyneth Paltrow criticized the retired optometrist’s “false claim” after the verdict was announced.
I felt that acquiescing to a false claim compromised my integrity,
she said.
I am pleased with the outcome, and I appreciate all of the hard work of Judge Holmberg and the jury, and thank them for their thoughtfulness in handling this case.
During her testimony, Gwyneth Paltrow told the court:
Mr. Sanderson categorically hit me on the ski slope, and that is the truth.
Sanderson, who is 76 years old, sued the actor for $300,000 (£242,000).
Gwyneth Paltrow said that these claims were false, and she criticized the man in court for making her miss “half a day of skiing.”
The founder of Goop sued and asked for just $1 plus money to cover her legal fees.
Gwyneth Paltrow was questioned for the first time on Friday (March 24), and Sanderson, a retired eye doctor, was questioned for the first time on Monday (March 27).
He said:
It takes my breath away – this is hard, I don’t like going through this scene.
I just remember everything was great and then I heard something I’ve never heard at a ski resort – a blood-curdling scream and then – boom – and it was like somebody was out of control, and going to hit a tree and was going to die, and that’s what I heard until I was hit.
Oh my gosh, somebody is out of control and they’re really seriously out of control.
Sanderson said that his story was true, but the jury didn’t believe him.
Also, we can’t help but wonder what Gwyneth Paltrow is going to do with the money she won. What can you get for $1 on the Goop website? Anyone?
