Halle Bailey Reflects on Her Experience with “The Color Purple” Revamp
The talented Halle Bailey, widely known for her role in “The Little Mermaid,” recently opened up about her exhilarating time on the set of the revamped “The Color Purple.” In an intimate discussion with Cosmopolitan prior to the actors’ strike, Bailey painted a vivid picture of the movie musical’s atmosphere, describing it as “beautifully Blackity Black.”
Oprah Winfrey Returns, Not as an Actor, but as a Producer
“The Color Purple” is no stranger to star power, and its latest rendition is no exception. While Bailey is a part of an impressive cast list, the film is being produced by none other than Oprah Winfrey. Fans might recall Winfrey’s stellar performance in the 1985 version, which was masterfully directed by Steven Spielberg.
However, for Bailey, this movie became much more than just another project. She revealed, “We all care so much about the original story and really wanted to do a good job with this reimagining.” She couldn’t contain her excitement about her colleagues’ performances, especially mentioning Fantasia and Taraji, stating, “I get chills just thinking about it.”
A Tale of Sisterhood: Personal and On-screen
Delving deeper into her connection with the story, Bailey expressed, “The reason I wanted to do it — and the reason I felt connected to it — is that it’s about the beautiful bond of sisterhood.” She found parallels with her own life, particularly her bond with her sister and music partner, Chloe Bailey. Discussing the deep connection between the characters Nettie and Celie, she revealed how it reminded her of her own relationship with Chloe. She said, “I could pull from my own experience with my sister, who’s my angel and my best friend.”
Merging Film and Music: Bailey’s Dual Passion
In an accompanying video titled “The Breakdown” by Cosmopolitan, Bailey shared her eagerness for the musical adaptation of “The Color Purple,” which provided her an opportunity to blend her passion for acting and music. The cherry on top? Bailey revealed, “I actually got to write an original song for the film as well.” With a sparkle in her eyes, she continued, “It’s just a combination of all the things that I love and the stories that matter so much to us.”
For fans and moviegoers, the anticipation is palpable. “The Color Purple,” with its enriched cast and compelling story, promises to be a holiday treat, gracing theaters on December 25.
